Practicing patience and reflecting on seemingly unrelated happenings will lead to a rich understanding of how we are where we are. Self-progress does not have our (infinite) qualities compartmentalized into separate trajectories. It is instead a whirlwind of all components, ebbing and flowing wisdom from one to another. We are eventually lead to new bridges of insight and filled with more dynamism because of it... trust the disjunct evolution.

FIELD STUDIES is a series of works by Elizabeth A. Baker, that explore human presence in various sonic landscapes. All performances are done as a one shot recording, with most of the panning and sonic movement attributed to the placement of the toy piano, synth, voice, waterphone, and found objects in physical space away from or next to the recorder. The works are then gently manipulated in the studio, they serve multiple roles as standalone object d’ art and partners to static and moving images. 

In BIRD WORD - PLUNK, an entire improvised performance on toy piano is recorded inside Robinson Preserve alongside the dawn chorus. A temperature inversion which caused the sound of road noise to prominently bleed into the raw recordings is interpreted in the studio as a series of gated sine tones oscillating through a pitch plug-in... the sonic ecology that should exist in a place reserved for nature is slowly but surely bent towards the will of humans.

I completed this piece in spring of 2019 and performed it at my solo piano recital around the same time. the concept behind this piece is change over time, based on our experiences throughout life. we find that day to day not much changes, but when we look back everything is different.

Three Meditations from the Edge is a multi-movement work for string orchestra and a variety of enhancement as well as soloists. The fragility of an edge is juxtaposed with the sharpness of an edge — an example is the edge of a
piece of paper, too fragile to easily balance or stack another object and yet sharp enough to draw blood in an instant. The work also exists at the edge of experimental music, a first entree composed specifically for advanced
string students at Barron Collier High School under the direction of Jordan P. Lamb. Throughout the piece students interact with extended techniques with and without the bow, as well as found objects and a variety of electronic soloists including interactive patches, theremin, fixed media, boutique synthesisers, and a dot matrix printer.

This project was designed as part of an artist residency, and recording project for STARS OF DIFFERENT HUES, a
unique outreach project focused on exposing students to experimental art and sound practices, developed by
New Renaissance Artist Elizabeth A. Baker.
