Devotion to the Teacher

patita-pāvana tomā bine keho nāi

TRANSLATION
1) O Vaisnava Gosvami, please be merciful to me now. There is no one except you who can purify the fallen souls.
 
2) Where does anyone find such a merciful personality by whose mere audience all sins go far away?
 
3) After bathing in the waters of the sacred Ganges many times, one becomes purified, but just by the sight of you, the fallen souls are purified. This is your great power.
 
4) The holy name delivers one who has committed an offense to Lord Hari, but if one commits an offense to you, there is no means of deliverance.
 
5) Your heart is always the resting place of Lord Govinda, and Lord Govinda says, "The Vaisavas are in My heart."
 
6) I desire the dust of your holy feet in every birth I may take. Please consider Narottama yours, and be kind upon him.

“Who is Krishna Chaitanya, and what is His significance?”

If we turn to academic sources for an answer, we will find considerable historical data. A New History of India, by Stanley Wolpert, states, “In Bengal the most popular of all bhakti Hindu preachers was the teacher Chaitanya.” In A History of Indian Philosophy, the respected Surendranath Dasgupta writes, “The religious life of Chaitanya unfolds unique psychological symptoms of devotion which are perhaps unparalleled in … history… .” And the Encyclopaedia Brittannica refers to Lord Chaitanya’s “profound and continuing effect on the religious sentiments of his Bengali countrymen.” The Brittanica also states that Lord Chaitanya propagated “the community celebration [sankirtana] of Krishna as the most powerful means of bringing about the proper bhakti attitude.”

From the historical records about Lord Chaitanya, we certainly see a picture of a God-conscious saint who appeared in India during the sixteenth century. But we have to seek further—into the devotional Vedic literature—to understand the full, spiritual significance of Lord Chaitanya and the bhakti movement that He inaugurated.

We should consult the biographies of Lord Chaitanya, especially the Chaitanya-bhagavata, by Vrindavana dasa Thakura, and the Chaitanya-charitamrita, by Krishnadasa Kaviraja. Both of these works were compiled in the sixteenth century and are filled with first-hand accounts of Lord Chaitanya’s acts and teachings. They also give us an accurate picture of the social and religious setting in which Lord Chaitanya lived. The Chaitanya-charitamrita is especially valuable, because the author quotes extensively from the Sanskrit Vedic scriptures to authoritatively and logically establish the divinity of Lord Chaitanya.

One of the opening verses of Chaitanya-charitamrita boldly asserts that Lord Chaitanya is none other than the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna Himself:

What the Upanishads describe as the impersonal Brahman is but the effulgence of His body, and the Lord known as the Supersoul (Paramatma) is but His localized plenary portion. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna Himself, full with six opulences [wealth, fame, strength, beauty, knowledge, and renunciation]. He is the Absolute Truth, and no other truth is greater than or equal to Him.

Srila Prabhupada says:

Rama and Krishna are names of God, and Hare is the energy of God. So when we chant the maha-mantra, we address God together with His energy. This energy is of two kinds, the spiritual and the material. At present we are in the clutches of the material energy. Therefore we pray to Krishna that He may kindly deliver us from the service of the material energy and accept us into the service of the spiritual energy. That is our whole philosophy. Hare Krishna means, "O energy of God, O God [Krishna], please engage me in Your service." It is our nature to render service. Somehow or other we have come to the service of material things, but when this service is transformed into the service of the spiritual energy, then our life is perfect.

par karenge naiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya,

krishna kanhaiya dauji ke bhaiya

krishna kanhaiya vamshi bajaiya,

makhana curaiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya (1)

 

Worship Kanhaiya*, the brother of Balarama. Kanhaiya’s lotus feet are the boat to

take us across the ocean of material life. Worship Kanhaiya, that Krishna who stays in

Vraja, playing the flute and from every gopi’s house steals butter (that is, the soft and

pure white hearts that are like butter).

[*Kanhaiya - Yashoda-maiya’s pet name for her darling son. This name is brimming over with sweetness and affection.]

 

krishna kanhaiya girivara uthaiya,

krishna kanhaiya rasa racaiya

para karenge naiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya (2)

 

Worship Kanhaiya, that Krishna who lifted Govardhana Hill and performed the Rasali

la. His lotus feet are the boat to take us across the ocean of material life.

 

mitra sudama tandula lae,

gale laga prabhu bhoga lagaye

kaha kaha kaha bhaiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya (3)

 

When His friend Sudama brought Him some low-grade rice, He accepted it, embraced

him and cried, “O My brother, you haven’t come for such a long time! Where have

you been? Did you forget Me?” Worship that Krishna!

 

arjuna ka ratha rana me haka,

shyamaliya giridhari baka

kali-naga nathaiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya (4)

 

In the Mahabharata war Shyamaliya became Arjuna’s

chariot driver, directing the horses on the battlefield. He lifted Govardhana Hill at

such a tender age and He subdued Kaliya-naga by putting a rope through his nose,

dragging him out of the Yamuna. Worship that Krishna!

 

drupata-suta jaba dushtana gheri,

rakhi laja na kini deri

agaye cira badhaiya re, bhaja krishna kanhaiya (5)

 

Worship that Kanhaiya who immediately came to protect Draupadi by increasing

her cloth unlimitedly when she was surrounded by so many wicked men.
