There is also much written about this ancient mantra from the Rig Veda, and the first line (which is considered to be an invocation rather than part of the mantra).  I show one of the simpler interpretations following the lyrics.

This composition has two melodic parts.  After a couple of passes through the typical call-response-call-response for each melody, the chant then goes to one pass through each melody, with Gina Salá and I singing each part together, which would be the equivalent of shifting to everyone singing together rather than singing call and response in a live kirtan.  

Note that the mantra does not traditionally close with 'Om" but doing so in this composition creates a powerful 'pause' between each iteration.

The track opens with a cello intro by Eddie Young, and features Gina Salá joining me for call and response vocals.  Gina also sings some exquisite improvisational vocals, which are the focal point of the conclusion of the track (and the entire album).  In addition to Eddie Young on cello, it also instrumentally features Ben Leinbach on bass guitar and drums, and Natesh on guitar, drums and hand percussion.

The compositions of Sri Muruganar are from ‘Ramana Sannidhi Murai’ which is a magnum opus on Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. These spiritual outpourings have been highly regarded and declared by Sri Bhagavan to be on par with ‘Thiruvachagam’ in its devotional fervor, sung by the great saint Sri Manikkavasagar.

Sri Sadhu OM Swami like Sri Muruganar,was another great  poet - saint and a enlightened devotee of Bhagavan Ramana. Due to his sincere and steadfast adherence to the practice of Sri. Ramana’s teachings, and his total self-effacement, he became a fit vessel to receive the grace of Sri. Ramana in its fullest measure and to attain thereby firm and steady abidance in the state of Self-knowledge.

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga's "rock star." With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling western chant artist of all time.
