A pastiche of recordings made in late July 2021 in various locations near Lutsen and Grand Marais Minnesota. Many days of listening and recording revealed some commonalities. First, it was almost impossible to escape human-generated noise, even in the most remote parts of the Superior National Forest. Second, there was surprisingly little "natural" sound in some places. The most characteristic "natural" sounds were of insects and water (and wind). In many of the recordings I made, I noted many very short sounds connected with quite long sounds. I attempted to combine the two, as a sort of natural granular synthesis discourse throughout the piece. The piece is regularly interrupted by a voice, reciting the names of lakes in the area.

A field recording made on November 25, 2014 of the Mississippi River as it ices up for the winter.  I used a TASCAM digital recorder and Sennheiser MKE-600 microphone to make this short recording.

Recording made 12/19/14 near St. Cloud Medical Group South building.  There is a space that reflects sound so dramatically that it sounds like an artificial reverb.

as though it possessed no self induction, reimagined

A recomposing of a starkly minimal work created in 2017, Interplait features intimate voices woven together with the sounds of a metal singing bowl. The timbre of the voices merge with that of the bowl as they travel through space, creating a meditative effect.
