Having to give up and go.

Building like a mason travesty wasted
the curtain raised for the show

Having and asking another is masking
power abused to grow.

Hopeful, a diner by himself a boozer on the shelf.

Dilute, imprisoned systematically, forever old and caustically.

Never can you listen as rain water glistens
Hoping for an execution stay.

Having people lined up and thrown in the trash heap 
of life as if any old day.

Making mistakes but reforming their way as they list ‘felon’ on a resume’

Hey no one! Locked away; 18 years to rot, racist jury swayed.

Hey no one! We’re still here; hope outwilled our carcinogenic fear.

Maybe it’s a willingness to recognize the hideous for seeds of justice to sow
   
Insane by the game of feeling the shame judged by a jury of peers

Prison guard punches doesn’t give reason doesn’t understand his way.

Hoping for umbrellas while rain falls harder as one more you have to save.

Kristina Stykos is a musician, recording engineer, writer and performer based in Vermont. She produces recordings and videos for her label Thunder Ridge Records and for clients, at Pepperbox Studio in Lincoln, VT. She has produced over 30 albums and music videos. Her latest solo album "River of Light" (2019) featuring guitarist Val McCallum [Jackson Browne] took the #2 slot on County Tracks “Best Vermont Albums of 2019”. ​ ​Writing under the pseudonym Vermont Ridgerunner, she shares her images and essays several times a week, based on current ramblings around the Vermont woods and in the gardens where she works as Gardenessa. Her latest book of poetry "Ridgerunner" (2019) is available on Shires Press, including a deluxe edition featuring her dynamic nature photography. As a musician, composer and poet, she has been supported by the Ucross Foundation & Brush Creek artist residencies of Wyoming, and by the Vermont Community Foundation.
