Last night I camped by a small wetland in a woodland in central NSW. As their had been some recent rain, Giant Banjo Frogs (Limnodynastes interioris) were out in number making their distinctive deep 'bonk' calls. This species is larger than it's more familiar cousin, the Eastern Banjo Frog or 'Pobblebonk' and makes a slightly lower pitched call. Being a burrowing frog, they spend most of their life concealed underground, emerging only after rains to feed and spawn. 

You can also hear the staccato calls of Spotted Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis) & the higher pitched 'squelch' of the Eastern Sign-bearing Froglet (Crinia parinsignifera)

These sounds were gathered by Vicki Powys during a three month recording and painting expedition to Northern Australia in the winter of 1990. This collection includes highlights such as the shrieks of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo soaring overhead and the close calls of a lone Dingo which - at the time - was identified by internationally respected wildlife communities both in Australia and abroad, as the only known recording of such.

"I had recently bought a small four-wheel-drive car and a tent and had set off with a twofold purpose - to explore the landscape for painting and to record wildlife sounds. The sounds would later evoke the places every bit as much as my sketches and photographs. My recording gear was fairly basic, using a compact cassette (Sony WMD6C), with two ‘tie-pin’ microphones in a quasi-binaural setup for stereo sounds. Despite the limitations of the equipment, the sounds are still very evocative for me, of those times and places. The dingo that I recorded at Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park, Northern Territory) was later hailed by the British Library of Wildlife Sounds as ‘the only known recording of a lone dingo howling, in the wild’." Sir David Attenborough presents the Vogelkop bowerbird of west New Guinea. The forest floor resembles a market stall with neat piles of brightly-coloured fruits and leaves placed carefully on a mossy lawn in front of a cave of thatched twigs. This is the work of the Vogelkop bowerbird. Native to New Guinea and Australia, this drab olive brown male, uses aesthetic tastes to bring vibrancy of colour into his life: and to woo his mate. His brightly coloured exhibits are graded for size and colour and any withered or faded items are quickly replaced. Satisfied with his work, he whistles, and growls to entice her to a private view. After mating the female departs to rear her single chick unaided, while the male returns to the task of tending his creation. Published on September 23, 2014.

Miranda Krestovnikoff presents Australia's satin bowerbird. Then male is a blackish looking bird with bright purple eyes, whose plumage diffracts the light to produce an indigo sheen with a metallic lustre. He builds a U-shaped bower of sticks on the forest floor into which he hopes to lure a female. But brown twigs on a brown woodland floor aren't very eye-catching, so he jazzes up the scene with an array of objects from berries and bottle-tops to clothes-pegs and even ballpoint pens. All have one thing in common: they are blue. The male dances around his bower to attract the greenish females: often holding something blue to impress her. As he poses, he calls enticingly to advertise his prowess. Once she's made her choice, she will leave to build her nest and rear her young alone. Published on October 21, 2014.
