Selkirk Common Riding takes place on the first Friday after the second Monday in June each year.  It commemorates the Riding of the Marches (the land given to the town by King David in the 13th century) and the return to the town of the sole survivor of the Battle of Flodden in 1513. He was called Fletcher and he brought with him an English Flag which is now displayed in the local museum.  The climax of the day is the Casting of the Colours (or flags) in the town centre.
