My 4th album 'Chop Suey' is an exploratory journey of my heritage and sound. The album art is a painting by my late Grandfather, Fred Eng. It paints a vibrant scene straight out of the heart of San Fransisco's China Town. My Grandfather passed when I was 4 years old and unfortunately, due to the pressure to assimilate, much of my Chinese heritage has vanished. Through art, music, and photography I have the opportunity to rekindle that connection and explore my generational roots. This album is a homage to my ancestors and a rekindling of their wisdom that is in my DNA.

From his sound design to his compositions and live sets, there isn't anything he does that isn't of the highest quality and utmost psychedelic. Remedy is yet another dive into the psychedelic pools Mr Lang has tapped into.

Duffrey proposed a fun challenge in Synthesis.Audio, where we were encouraged to reflect on a meaningful moment from childhood and translate that experience—along with its emotions—into sound. The goal was to craft an ambient piece in about 3 hours that tells a story. It's also a practice in imperfection.

The memory I chose to capture from my childhood is when I would visit the train station and watch the trains pass by. I had always been mesmerized by the rhythmic pulse of the trains, feeling the vibrations underfoot as they rolled by. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, the air was often filled with wind and rain, so I’ve incorporated those elements into the track as well, reflecting the atmosphere of those moments.

Around that time, I had also been delving into Einstein’s theory of special relativity, especially the concept of observing light from the perspective of a train traveling at the speed of light. This sparked a fascination with the physics of light, and it brought a new sense of wonder to those moments at the train station. As a result, you’ll hear subtle hints of sci-fi influences woven throughout the track, a nod to those childhood thoughts about the nature of time and space.

This piece is an ode to both the simplicity and complexity of those experiences—a blending of memory, emotion, and the distant echoes of scientific curiosity.

A Train Of Thought

Duffrey came up with a fun little challenge to make an ambient track inspired by childhood memories. The goal was to spend a few hours on this one, but not overthink it.

This track is how it felt to wake up / go to sleep outside as a kiddo in the bayou in southeast Texas. 

I always loved camping... this one is called "沢" AKA "marsh"

I've been making a lot of ambient soundscapes lately... I just haven't released them into the wild just yet :3

This song is part of a challenge I created for synthesis.audio.

The prompt of the challenge was to write an ambient song inspired by an early childhood memory in only 3 hours. Each sound of the song is made based off of a different element of the memory. This is an exercise in creating for the sake of creating.

My memory here is one of my mothers Tiger Lily's. Before she passed, our house always had the most beautiful flowers that I at times would help her plant. What really happened is that I'd run off and play while she worked. This memory is of me tired, laying in the grass trying to catch my breath, watching the clouds drift by on a sunny spring day. (the bird sounds are recordings from my childhood home that I recorded a a couple months ago) I always look at flowers differently now, but that only really makes them more beautiful every time I see them bloom. The next chance you get, look at the blooming flowers a little longer than you normally would for those who are no longer with us. Spend a little more time in the stillness and beauty of nature for those who no longer can.
