The Maps They Held

California-based r beny appeared on my radar late last year, with his beautifully crafted opus fashioned from modular and hardware synthesizers entitled cascade symmetry. Kicking of 2018, now on Dauw label from Ghent (Belgium), this mysterious composer returns with a cassette (and digital) album, titled saudade, which is now available for pre-order. The sparkling synth bits are back, shimmering in a sunlight of the San Jose beaches, bathed in light winds of tape hiss and lo-fi textural treatments. “Saudade” is a Portuguese word, referencing to a melancholic state of mind, and its loose translation perfectly captures the mood of longing for someone with a repressed knowledge that they may never return. The opening track, “fernwood”, which we are proud to premiere for you today, is a beautiful and fragile prelude to an emotional journey.

Mordançage is a new project from Tobias Hellkvist and Andrew Tasselmyer...  

The new album is a reference to the photography technique that creates  a degraded appearance in photo prints by physically altering film, a close metaphor for the way the album was created; manipulation of source audio and sound design creating a very different result.

I’m pleased to close the year with an artist that I personally contacted for publishing with KrysaliSound after having listened to his album “Wet Petals” released by Naviar Records.
Hirotaka Shirotsubaki is a Kobe-based musician that uses sampled guitars to create dreamy landscapes and emotional textures moving the listener in a quiet and safe inner dwelling. I am proud to present his new album “Last Goodbye” available in KrysaliSound’s catalogue starting from December 9. About the album Hirotaka says:
 
"In Japan, the era called "Heisei" will end this year. My life was with this "Heisei" era.
In order to live a new era with one break at the end of this era while I am alive, I have decided the title of this album to be "last goodbye" with a determination of parting.
The 6 tracks that make up this album have my memory fragments scattered around."

The Wine Dark Sea is Bissonnette’s fifth solo studio album. The album’s title is derived from the writings of Homer, where he oft referred to a rough and stormy sea as “wine-dark”. Homer’s descriptions of colour are devoid of any reference to the colour blue. And any suggested meaning in his description of the sea point to the colour red. This apparent contradiction has brought much speculation about the significance and understanding of colour in ancient Greece. Keeping with the motif of colour, track titles on the album are based on references from contemporary artists and their insights on colour, form and implied meaning.

The album represents a shift for Bissonnette’s work, moving from an exclusively synth-based series of explorations to a hybrid of electronic and acoustic methods. The result is a rolling and slow-moving tide of tones and undulations. The textures are in some passages soft and mollifying but fluently shift to moments of tension and unease. The Wine Dark Sea is an aural allegory to sound and colour and our tenuous understanding of abstract meaning.
