Kimberly St. John‘s first DJ mentors gave her simple instructions: Know your music. No matter how much may have changed in the 20 years since, she still takes it upon herself to keep on dance music’s cutting edge.

While her selections typically fall somewhere on the house and techno spectrum, her only real criteria is tracks that she loves. Her passion is evident the moment you see her dancing behind the decks. A founding partner of the Electronic Music Alliance (EMA), she has effectively channeled it as a means of enacting positive social change.

Kimberly St. John was born in Denver, Colorado. As a teenager she spent her summers visiting her father in Hawaii, where he exposed her to new wave bands like Talking Heads and Oingo Boingo. In the mid ‘90s she permanently relocated to Los Angeles, and in 1997 she began working as A&R for Offworld Music. 

Shortly thereafter,  a DJ and producer friend gave St. John her first set of turntables and taught her to play vinyl records. Following the turn of the millennium she began performing at warehouse parties throughout Downtown Los Angeles. She then moved to San Diego where she held down residencies at sought-after venues.

Upon returning to her hometown of Denver in 2017, Kimberly St. John’s career gathered significant momentum. With her EMA work renewing her sense of purpose in the dance music sphere, she became a household name in the Mile High underground. To date she has graced the decks at such local mainstays as Bar Standard, The Church, Temple, Beta, Milk Bar, Triangle, XBar, Glow Lounge, Fusion Factory, Thee Haus ov Where Gallery, Release Studio, EKŌ HOUSE, and Tennyson’s Tap. She played multiple stages at Burning Man, including going b2b with DJ Dan and other well known artists.

Beyond connecting people on the dance floor, St. John sees every DJ set as an opportunity to give back to a community that’s given her so much. As an experience curator she strives to pay homage to the pioneers of early rave while paving the way for new generations to follow in their footsteps. That she is so inclined to make her music about something bigger than herself is perhaps the reason her audience has grown in recent years.
