JACKRABBIT HOMESTEAD is a book, installation and downloadable car audio tour by Kim Stringfellow exploring the cultural legacy of the Small Tract Act in Southern California's Morongo Basin region near Joshua Tree National Park. Stories from this underrepresented regional history are told through the voices of local residents, historians, and area artists—many of whom reside in reclaimed historic cabins and use the structures as inspiration for their creative work.

Morning soundscape recording made at the Wee Thump Wilderness, April 2020.  Wee Thump (in Paiute language meaning "ancient ones") is a desert forest of old-growth Joshua Trees located a few miles west of Searchlight, Nevada.  The featured birds in this recording are Great-horned Owls, Brewer's Sparrows and Cactus Wrens.

Kim Stringfellow is an artist, educator, writer and independent curator based in Joshua Tree, CA. Her work bridges cultural geography, public practice and experimental documentary into creative, socially engaged transmedia experiences. She is a 2016 Andy Warhol for the Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow and a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from Claremont Graduate University in 2018. Stringfellow is a Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University’s School of Art + Design.
