The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

"The Silent, Understood" by Our Quiet Fog

Process notes - 

- Am6 inversion. 
- Ableton Random device
- Velocity device to allow for about a 50% chance of randomness  
- Arpeggiator device
- Chord device
- chose a basic EIC2 grand piano (legacy Live Pack) sound for this.  
- Scale device set to C Iwato 
-  Live's Echo device
- I used 2 Random Max4Live LFO devices

At around 26+ minutes.  Turn off looping, disable record arm, disable the MIDI track.  

Ready to review, I find a spot near 14 min and draw in a fade during the quick part and decide to give it a fade out for the purposes of the Junto.  I decide this piece will be called "The Silent, Understood"  I do an export to WAV and check the file on disk.  4:36.  A bit long for my Juntos, but whatever.  It could have been 26 minutes!  

- Ozone 9 master using a slight variation on a classical preset with some reduced lufs-iness.

lovely to sit at @stellato-strings piano again and record improvisations again for the first time in 2023. more pieces to be made in the coming weeks from yesterday afternoon's session. for starters here's me, the piano and its harmonics, the wind chimes outside, Audacity editing and the life game of chance (there's no such thing as chance) at play.

This is this week's response to the weekly Naviar Haiku challenge:

Evening sky,
the silhouettes of farmers in their fields
deepen.

A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

"sear", premiered by Alarm Will Sound and Alan Pierson at Richardson Auditorium on March 21, 2023.

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen (or at the grill) cooking. It’s something I love to do for myself and others, whether I’m preparing meals for the week or hosting a gathering. In 2018, I read Samin Nosrat’s Salt Fat Acid Heat from cover to cover. At the time, I was more passionate about eating than I was about cooking, but I was willing to learn. 

In the section of the book on Heat, the author talks about an event called the Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction in which heat causes browning of proteins and sugars within ingredients. There are many ways to achieve the Maillard reaction, one of them being the searing method. Simply put, you prepare an extreme heat source (like a 700 degree skillet), you put a raw ingredient on the skillet (like a steak), and then the surface becomes deeply browned (and incredibly flavorful). A few drawbacks of this method include smoking up your kitchen, setting off the fire alarm, sweating profusely, but it’s worth it for the flavor (…sometimes…this is why I like the grill, even in the dead of winter).

sear is a piece based on extreme contrasts, with the idea of blistering heat in mind.
