Pleased to share the 12th episode of the Digital Sound Residency hosting British multi-instrumentalist Lucy Railton with ‘Medieval Sui’, an ambiguous, intimate piece conceived during a period of stay in Venice while sheltering from torrential rain, dramatic tidal shifts and surreal opulent encounters. 

Lucy Railton is a cellist, composer, and curator whose practices originate from a deep dedication to the physicality of sound. Her works span electroacoustic practices to field recordings, exploring the realms of resonance, psychoacoustics, synthesis and microtonality. 
Since 2018, she has released albums on imprints like Modern Love, Editions Mego, Portraits GRM, PAN, ECM, SN Variations, Shelter Press and Takuroku.

In November 2023, Lucy released 'Corner Dancer' via Modern Love, immaculately articulating the breadth of her artistic range, drawn from a nearly 20 year career as a soloist, writer and collaborator. 
Following her 2018 solo debut ‘Paradise 94’, and countless collaborations - recently in duo with legendary EMS co-founder Peter Zinovieff and in trio with Kali Malone and Stephen O’Malley, plus appearances on recordings by Beatrice Dillon, Ellen Arkbro, Laurel Halo and Petter Eldh - Railton’s diverse musical circles bleed into each other, revealing vulnerable and compelling emotional facets through a fluid mix of composition, and pure expression.

Lucy Railton - Medieval Sui

We are pleased to host multidisciplinary artist and Fixed Adobe label head Rainy Miller for the 13th episode of the Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency, unveiling ‘My Wings, Never Clipped / But They Began Semi-Broken’, an uplifting abstract soundscape not just to be listened to but, most of all, to be felt.

Rainy Miller, birth name Jack Bowes, was born in Longridge, a small market town eight miles from Preston. Subservient to the northern city in which he was born and raised, the region’s nearly forgotten underbelly is sewn into the fabric of Rainy Miller’s music and motif.
His passion for music and production can be traced back to the idiosyncratic grime sound that swept through his hometown in the early 2000s, a hyper-localised scene that paired grime beats with rapid-fire bars. After moving to Manchester, Rainy quickly became integral part of the North West experimental electronic scene alongside artists such as Iceboy Violet, Space Afrika, and Blackhaine. 

Integrating aesthetics from his childhood through a DIY approach, Miller’s own output is nothing if not strikingly unique. Rejecting any attempt to define ‘genre’, he shapes emotionally charged soundscapes intertwining cinematic autotune vocals around deconstructed drill and industrial ambient soundscapes.

His debut release ‘Limbs’ in 2019 already showed the signs of his very own approach: a soulful neo-R&B excursion throughout ten tracks of emoting autotune over smooth, moody melodic beats interspersed with dabbles of Preston chitter-chatter. 
In 2020, a long-time collaboration started with Blackhaine, whom Rainy shared the studio with. The same year, Blackhaine released his debut EP ‘Armour’ produced by Rainy on Fixed Abode, followed by the co-produced ‘And Salford Falls Apart’ (2021 via The White Hotel’s HEAD II label) and ‘Armour II’ (2022 via Fixed Abode).
Following his second solo project, ‘A Choreographed Interruption’ (2021 via Fixed Abode), in 2023 Rainy released ‘DESQUAMATION’ via HEAD II, his latest and most ambitious project to date. A full bloodied, emotionally visceral piece of work segueing and stretching across a sound world of contorted pop and laconic drill that will cement Miller’s position at the cutting edge of contemporary electronic music, pushing the culture to always move forward.

Rainy Miller will be teaming up with Emma DJ to perform at WE TRAVEL TO KNOW OUR OWN GEOGRAPHY, the two-day festival on April 18th and 19th presented and co-curated by Kuboraum together with Terraforma, in partnership with Combo, during the Opening of the 60th Venice Art Biennale.

Rainy Miller - My Wings, Never Clipped / But They Began Semi-Broken

Ugandan rapper and Nyege Nyege affiliate MC Yallah teams up with Berlin-based producer Debmaster to unleash ‘Nzimba Zinyota’ for the 14th episode of the Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency.

Hailing from Kenya and shaped by Uganda, MC Yallah has etched her legacy in the hip-hop realm for nearly two decades. Fluent in Luganda, Luo, Kiswahili, and English, she seamlessly fuses conscious and futuristic hip-hop, grime, punk, and trap into her music. With her rapid, precise delivery and a distinct, poetic, and experimental style, she draws from her own journey to confront women’s issues and champion integrity and self-empowerment.

Her latest release ‘Yallah Beibe’ (2023) via Hakuna Kulala is the fiery follow-up to Yallah and Debmaster's acclaimed 2019 debut ‘Kubali’. After her tour plans were cut short as COVID-19 broke out in 2020, Yallah returned to Kampala and started work on her sophomore album at Nyege Nyege's villa. The process was more complicated this time around, developing pointedly from an initial back-and-forth with Debmaster and flourishing as beats appeared from Japanese producer Scotch Rolex and Congolese club maestro Chrisman. The finished album is an international patchwork of futuristic cyber-rap experiments fastened together by Yallah's unforgettable personality and elastic flow.

MC Yallah & Debmaster - Nzimba Zinyota

Kenyan singer, songwriter, and producer Lord Spikeheart challenges the boundaries of sound, stretching its limits to the extreme, in the 15th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency, unleashing ‘SILENCE IN THE C-DRAL’, a hallucinatory exploration of metal and trap featuring Italian producer and collaborator Talpah.

Over the past decade, vocalist Martin Kanja, AKA Lord Spikeheart, has become a figurehead of the burgeoning Kenyan metal scene, cultivating a distinctive blend of guttural yawps, screeching screams, and gravelly rap verses that seep menacingly through head-banging instrumentals. 

Best known for his unmistakable harsh vocals as the live-wire frontman of DUMA, Martin has been building bridges between African heavy music and the international electronic and metal scenes, earning intercontinental attention via extensive tours in Europe and the US, as well as appearances at major festivals like Primavera Sound, Roadburn Festival, Roskilde, Sonar, and Le Guess Who, to name a few. Last April, he also performed in Venice during We Travel To Know Our Own Geography, the two-days festival presented by Kuboraum and Terraforma in partnership with Combo during the opening weekend of the 60th Venice Biennale.

Recently released via his HAEKALU records, Lord Spikeheart’s debut album ‘The Adept’ is an incandescent new frontier in extreme music, critically acclaimed by prestigious media outlets such as The Guardian, Pitchfork, BBC Radio, Arte, Dazed, The Fader, NTS, Crack, Die Zeit, and The Quietus. The list of collaborators is an inspired one—Cardopusher/Safety Trance, Fatboi Sharif, Brodinski, and Backxwash are some of Kanja’s guests—but ‘The Adept’ never feels like anything less than something only Lord Spikeheart could have made. It’s the sound of an atom of the soul being split, unleashing an eldritch new energy.

We are pleased to present the 16th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency in collaboration with Catalan pianist, vocalist, and producer Marina Herlop. 
Crafting multifaceted worlds to spur and feed the imagination, Marina unveils ‘alas’, a nexus of unpredictable vocal melodies, digital synthesis, and phantasmagoria. 

Marina's musical journey began with classical training at an early age, but it wasn’t until her 20s—while immersed in music studies at the Conservatory—that she truly began to experiment with harmony and melody, culminating with the release of her debut album Nanook (Instrumental Records, 2016).

Her second album, Babasha (Aloud Music Ltd, 2018), marked the beginning of her integration of synths and electronic sounds, expanding her sonic palette toward a more cybernetic sound. With Pripyat (2022), her debut on the cult label PAN, Marina made an irrevocable shift into electronic music, weaving hypnotic rhythms, layers of processed vocals, and organic textures to craft new, brooding dimensions.
Her latest release, Nekkuja (PAN, 2023), continues the experimental touches of Pripyat, but with an unexpected lightness and positivity—an uplifting contrast in a scene often captivated by darkness and melancholy. Loosely themed around the metaphor of gardening, Nekkuja’s peaks and valleys invite an active, reflective listening experience.

In contrast to the view that an artist is an isolated genius or an idol to be worshipped, Herlop believes that the garden helps us see the process as closer to devotion or perseverance. A gardener brings order to the wild chaos of the outdoors, collaborating with nature to arrange something vibrant and enduring. Blending familiar sounds with fanciful concepts, Herlop traces an imaginary garden, imploring us to wander and wonder.
