Pleased to share the 9th episode of the Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency, hosting Studio LABOUR’s mind-altering soundscape mass and mess, dispersion of subjectivity.

LABOUR is the Berlin-based sonic entity composed by multidisciplinary artists Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander. Bringing together their experience in molecular biology, sound art and post-tonal theory, they compose ambitious and reverently experimental audio works centering around the transformative potential of sound. Their practice promotes active listening and a heightened sensory awareness, interrogating existential questions and the power structures that form our collective reality. Through immersive performances shifting between digital sound synthesis, algorithmic compositions, percussions and vocals, LABOUR explore the juxtaposition of amplified and unamplified sounds within specific architectural spaces.

'mass and mess, dispersion of subjectivity’ shows their continuing exploration of temporal juxtapositions, merging algorithmic rhythms with cyclical pulsing drum layers to discover alternative notions of time. This new track relates aesthetically to their previous pieces next time, die consciously (بیگانگی) and hit of enlightenment, contemplating on the construction-of-self and the extent to which external forces create us, being heteronomy the condition of all things. Operating simultaneously on multiple temporalities — from microsounds and stochastic synthesis to rhythmic cycles to acknowledging that which propels beyond — these pieces take a critical stance towards notions of regulated time by embracing rhythmic instability and sound as sculptural material.

Their recent performance Sungazing premiered in Kraftwerk during X100 Berlin Atonal (2022) is one of their most extensive works so far, involving an ensemble of 30 drummers, 7 string players, 4 dancers, 2 drum sets, and 3 visual artists, all distributed throughout the audience. Proposed within the framework of Xenakis’ legacy, the performance was described as ‘An ode to the one who pursues an experimental lifestyle, an ode to the avant-garde’. Other commissioned compositions and performances include: Eventide in collaboration with Fa’ Pawaka (2022), Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin ; Sungazing, HAU (2022), Berlin ;  Constructs of Sanity, Musica Sanae, Berlin (2019); nine-sum sorcery, Berlin Atonal (2019); Activating the Gropius Bau, Sonically, Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2019); next time, die consciously (بیگانگی), Berlin Atonal (2018); Hacklander’s Activating the Messeplatz, Sonically and Stochastic Activation: Basler Trommeln (with Isabel Lewis), Basilea, Art Basel (2018); conatus/consent, Neue Musik in St Ruprecht, St Ruprechtskirche, Vienna (2015) and Levels of Intrusion, transmediale, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2014).

Cosmica Bandida’s debut studio album “Lagrimas Saladas” is an amalgam of sounds influenced by the diverse  backgrounds of the members, who find themselves in Munich a city where the leftovers of cosmic music and 70s disco meet cumbia and tropical vampirism. Dark cumbia and psychedelic music collide with the moods of space disco in an album that engages the body. The first two songs that open the record, “5K Caballo” and “Lágrimas Saladas” explore the textures of synthesizers and the atmospheres of Colombian public pools in incandescent villages, while “Pájaro del Desierto” paints desert landscapes influenced  by Turkish and Egyptian psychedelic music. Closing the A-side with “Salsa Bandida” the band pays tribute to the basic and classic salsa rhythm in a Lo-fi reinterpretation with the Bogota fashion of cold and mountainous tropical music making.

Staring Out Of Windows [Self Release]

»Ödipus, Herrscher« is the debut release of Berlin-based, Japanese sound artist Mieko Suzuki on raster. It is the result of a composition commissioned by Schauspielhaus Bochum.
The classic, timeless material of Oedipus premiered as a dark dystopia in Bochum in 2021. Before the first words of the play are spoken, the auditorium is filled with an immersive drone that anticipates what will later become the bleak, underlying tone of the staged material: pestilence, decay, fear and resignation. The anticipation of the plot through this drone also introduces the key role of the sound, the importance of the music for this production. Mieko Suzuki produces sounds by gently stroking, scratching and hitting the various elements of her self-built instruments, made from archaic materials such as wood, stone, metal, fur and clay. Amplified by contact microphones, these sounds are electronically manipulated, alienated and distorted. Her central concern is direct interaction; the correspondence between acting and music through improvisation. With tracks such as »Disaster«, »Taboo«, »Pest« and »Vertigo« Mieko Suzuki translates scenarios and moments key to the story through a material resonance, transferring the compositional narrative of Oedipus into a dark and textured sonic terrain. Sonically and affectively, without illustrating it as a compositional narrative. »Vertigo«, for example, features a constantly playing Shepard tone, expressing the inevitability of the abyss.
In addition to this production, Mieko Suzuki is involved as a sound artist and musician in other theaterplays such as »Hamlet« at Schauspielhaus Bochum and »Demons« at the Vienna Burgtheater. She has performed at Mutek.JP (Tokyo), CTM Festival (Berlin), Human Club (Barcelona) and E1 (London), among others, and works as a DJ, a member of improvisation trio Contagious and co-organizer of the Berlin multidisciplinary event series Kookoo at OHM.

World-renowned drummer-composer Valentina Magaletti teams up with Japanese music producer and multi-instrumentalist Susumu Mukai aka Zongamin for the 11th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency. 

Valentina Magaletti and Susumu Mukai have been long-time collaborators since Vanishing Twin, the trio formed in 2015 with Cathy Lucas exploring the spaces bridging jazz and psychedelia through a sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop.

More recently, Zongamin joined Holy Tongue, a studio project formed in 2018 by producer and musician Al Wootton and Valentina Magaletti. Product of an improvised session in East London, Holy Tongue crafts a sound heavily influenced by dub reggae, translating into high energy live sets that invoke the experimental dub of On-U-Sound, the frenetic rhythms of 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid and ESG. The result is psychedelic, free-form, high energy, spiritual dub-dance music. 
Following on from a trilogy of critically acclaimed Eps, Holy Tongue recently released their debut album ‘Deliverance And Spiritual Warfare’ (2023) on Amidah Records, which channels their diverse influences, from the opening Andalusian catholic march to heavyweight dub via jazz, post punk, mystical percussion tracks and techno.

Valentina Magaletti and Zongamin make a fluid and effortless pair, neatly aligned and in perfect synergy with one another, allowing their own artistic talents to shine through their musical outputs. This becomes evident in their debut record as V/Z of dubby post-punk ‘Suono Assente’ (2023) on AD93, where Magaletti plays guitar and keys, sharing bass, percussion and vocal duties with Mukai, together with special guests as Vanishing Twin's Cathy Lucas, Coby Sey and Venus Ex Machina. Veering away from the psychedelic pop of VT, V/Z leans more heavily on influences from hip-hop, dub, post-punk and electronica, with a more open and fluid approach.

 “Whilst its brief twenty-eight minute runtime flashes by, leaving us gasping for more, Suono Assente never feels rushed. Making the temporary existence of this transient brilliance feel even more exceptional. No sooner has its presence lifted us, than it’s vanished once more, leaving a gaping void that can only be filled by immediately circling back to the start and dropping the needle once more.” (The Quietus)
