Somewhere between the ears and the eyes is a bridge of imaginary light. Somewhere in a dark room a bright cone of photons connects a slide projector to a wall. Dust motes drift like plankton in the glow. One thought overtakes another as the carousel clicks forward, shuffles; a new piece of celluloid drops into the projection slot, a new image illuminates the wall — visions of a recent past, filtered through what Mark Templeton calls the 'pink hue of mystery...' The ten compositions on Templeton's INNER LIGHT are reel-to-reel tape loop arrangements based on some 70s- and 80s-era meditation cassettes (found in a church library, with an archive of photographic slides which reappear in Templeton's supplementary photobook, A GUIDE TO INNER LIGHT).

Originally made to foster relaxation and well-being in a liturgical setting, the recordings now have a lysergic skew, as if heard underwater during the immersion of a baptism — a sonic lustration... An electric fan blows air onto an incandescent bulb hidden inside the machine. We hum along as the filament burns and we puzzle together a fantasy. We hear the inner light before we see it. The ears tell the eyes where to look, and the eyes look inward.”

Mark Templeton is a Canadian media artist and the founder of Graphical, an audiovisual label dedicated to publishing his own musical and image based experiments. Mark’s audio compositions are constructed from reel-to-reel tape loops and sampled cassettes that are contrasted with contemporary sound techniques. In his published photobooks, he incorporates his own 35mm pictures and found images, focusing on intangible fantasies and realities. During his audiovisual performances, he utilizes digital instruments while projecting his own photographs, VHS footage, Super 8 film, and other sampled video.

Since 2007, he has released material on various international record labels and photobook publishers, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other artists.

Templeton has performed live and exhibited his work at art galleries, festivals and alternative spaces throughout North America, Europe, United Kingdom and China.

Following the vibrant and dynamic energy of "Here and Now," The Tabula Rasa Record Company invites listeners to a new auditory exploration with our latest ambient compilation, "Altrove." Altrove, meaning 'elsewhere,' captures serene and meditative spaces which lie within and beyond the hustle and bustle of our built environments.

As the companion to our debut compilation "Here and Now," "Altrove" continues our exploration of contrasting musical moods and environments. While "Here and Now" celebrated the immediacy and vibrancy of the present, "Altrove" offers a journey to distant, tranquil spaces, encouraging a deeper connection with the serene aspects of our surroundings.

The Tabula Rasa community have come together to weave a tapestry of soundscapes that evoke the much needed stillness and tranquility of nature. Each track serves as a portal to secluded, introspective realms, inviting listeners to escape and immerse themselves in moments of calm and reflection.

Drawing inspiration from these essential moments of peace, "Altrove" features a curated selection of ambient pieces that highlight the interplay between organic textures and subtle electronic elements. From the gentle rustle of leaves to the distant echoes of a hidden stream, this compilation is a sonic retreat designed to provide respite and renewal.

The work derives from a study of the group theory and sonification model of physical objects interacting with each other according to various forces such as attraction, repulsion and gravity. In the context of music composition, the group theory was developed by Iannis Xenakis as a method organizing musical objects into so-called “sound complexes” (Xenakis prominently used the method in Nomos Alpha (1965) for solo cello). “Sound complexes” are highly structured musical objects which - alike Gestalten in perception theory - can be easily recognized from a perceptual point of view.

Fundamental for the emergence of ‘Groups: Articulations of the Real’ was a computer simulation of physical force fields. A force field is a mathematical expression describing the dependence of the energy of a system on the coordinates of its particles. It consists of an analytical form of the interatomic potential energy and a set of parameters entering into this form. The parameters are obtained by fitting to experimental data.

The iterative form of the composition moves from a global perspective of objects gradually attracting each other, oscillating, merging and colliding with its elastic boundaries, towards a close-up view of a rupture. In a way, the work attempts to articulate the real physical processes through computer-generated sound.
