Planet Radio Winter 2017

This episode of The Beat, titled “Better Safe Than Sorry,” looks at safe spaces, free speech, and racism on Western Washington University’s campus by examining a series of Islamophobic and anti-Arab posters found on campus on October 2. The show includes student voices from the Muslim Students’ Association and Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights, two clubs at WWU, as well as staff and faculty perspective. Past instances of racism on Western’s campus and in the Bellingham community are also discussed, as well as ways that students can respond to racism at universities and help work against cultures of hate and discrimination.

The Beat Fall 2017

This week’s episode details guest speaker Walida Imarisah, an educator and scholar who spoke as part of Western’s Dr. Martin Lither King Jr. Day lecture series, “We Are Not the Makers of History, We are Made By History.” Also included are upcoming events detailing how to work to eliminate sexual assault on campus, in addition to details on Western’s own troubled past with sexual assault.

To close, the show features excerpts from 2014’s KUGS 40th anniversary show in celebration of our upcoming 44th Anniversary on January 28. Music from Wild Nothing and the Talking Heads.

Western Student News 1/19/18

Today’s show is an interview with Yusef Mahmoud, a Palestinian actor and activist who is part of a production coming to Western next Tuesday, February 27th. The play is called Sahmatah: Memory of Stones, and the live performance is a two-person show depicting a Palestinian grandfather embarking on an emotional journey to describe his life in Palestine to his grandson.
	The name comes from a Palestinian village that was destroyed in the war following the founding of Israel in 1948. Yusef describes what makes Sahmatah different from other productions depicting life in occupied Palestine, as well as his the personal meaning of his involvement with the production.

This quarter's edition of The Beat features an extended interview with Saniah Naim, one of the founders of Western's new Arab Student Association, or ASA. Saniah discusses how ASA came about, why she and other Arab students at Western saw the need for an Arab culture club, and about their love for their culture and for sharing it with others.

Later in the show KUGS staff member Gabe Postle examines music theory in an interview with Jason McCaully, and the two delve into thinking about and questioning how we interact with music.

The Beat Winter 2018

On this quarter’s edition of KUGS’s locally produced news and public affairs show, News Director Matt Svilar sits down with WWU professor Dr. Brett Coleman and his class to discuss sexual assault on Western Washington University’s campus; more specifically the complete lack of adequate response to sexual violence on campus from the university’s administration. 

Dr. Coleman’s Human Service Professionals and Community Systems class has since the winter of 2018 been surveying students’ feelings of safety, respect, and trust toward Western’s administration in regard to sexual assault. This comes amidst a series of very public incidents of sexual violence on Western’s campus, ranging from predatory professors to even rape in student residence halls.
