On their most direct and confrontational record to date, Velvet Bone strip everything down to nerve and truth. These songs live in the uncomfortable space between recovery and reality — where clarity doesn’t heal, it exposes. Fast, urgent tracks like “Fast Enough To Forget,” “Bad Habits Die Loud,” and “Cold Coffee, No Sleep” burn with restless energy, while slower moments such as “Still Hungover,” “Dry Mouth Prayers,” and the title track “Sober” sit with the weight that sobriety doesn’t erase.

Lyrically, Sober is blunt and unsparing. There’s no victory lap here — only honesty. “Nothing Left To Hide” sets the tone early, choosing truth over comfort, while “Static In My Head” and “Choke The Sun” capture the mental noise and emotional pressure that linger long after the habits are gone. Even the inclusion of Paul Stanley’s “Move On” and “Live To Win” feels deliberate — reframed through Velvet Bone’s worn, grunge lens as survival anthems rather than bravado.

Musically, the album balances speed and restraint: gritty guitars, prominent bass, and drums that push forward without gloss. The influence of 90s alternative and grunge is clear, but Sober never leans on nostalgia. It sounds current because it’s lived-in.
