When I heard this beautiful song (penned by the famed Pakistani poet Ahmed Faraaz) set in Raag Vasanti (Bhoopkaali in Hindustani I suppose), I was so captivated by the tune.

And here is my effort, though with quite a few imperfections.

When we take the scale of Bhoopaali (Mohanam in Carnatic), and replace the Daivat with Komal Daivat, this melancholic Raag is derived. I read some where in the Net about a comment passed by the Ghazal Maestro – Khan Sahib Mehdi Hassan, the original singer of this song, on this Raag. He makes a special mention about the Komal Daivat of this Raag … “isee daivat mein saare bichardne ka dukh saamne aajaata hai….”

The meaning of the song (as I gathered) goes like this…

“Now that we are apart…. perhaps we might meet in our dreams…. some times,
Like finding a dried flower in an old book….!

Search for the pearls of trust in broken hearts… 
Perhaps you will find that treasure in those ruins…

You are not God…. Neither was my love divine…. 
When we are both human…. why did we meet each other under so many veils (with so many pretences?)
Like finding a dried flower in an old book….!

Worldly grief needs to be mixed with the woes of separation (from you)…
(Because Woes are like liquor)…. When two different liquors mix it just raises the level of intoxication (for one to bear the pain of both)….

Now, I am no longer what I was before…. nor you what you were…. 
The times we had together are gone…. long ago, Oh Faraaz!
The way we met in this life seems like a union of two shadows in the mirage of wishes….
(Nothing seems real…. neither you…. nor me…. nor our union… in the course of the passing time)!”

This is a song with melancholic mood running behind it. It mourns for a past that is gone for ever. It echoes our inability to get out of that mirage of our wishes. When we are pushed into the ruins of all those lost love, what is left are only tears and a wish to meet that lost love at least in a dream…. in future… some time… someday… at some place, like discovering that dried out flower from a page of our old book…
