Disquiet Junto Project 0529: Squared Off

I considered what "Minimum viable music" means to me.

For me, musicality has always linked directly to musicianship. A great practitioner of their instrument has great musicianship, and great musicianship opens the path to great musicality. Musicality then breeds music.

So in a quest to go minimal, I took the road of a single C2 note from a Juno synth (TAL Uno LX) -a square wave oscillator, everything open. Nothing easier than hitting a note! 
Then I sent the audio from that single note, looped at 134 BPM, into a load of effect tracks, comprising reverbs, delays, pitch shifters, overdrive distortions, and digital degradation effects units.

I wanted to expose my love for effect units. Nothing but a C2 on a Juno was used here. Musicianship is minimised fully - musicality comes from performance of 'effects', not of 'instruments'. Set up and play the effect units in a digital DAW. Minimum Viable Musicianship....

A Pluck from a Punk (disquiet0530)

Racky guitar driven track lead by female vocals crashing into huge heavy choruses and building to a noisy climax. Lyrically comments on the hopelessness of expressing individualistic opinions.

Recordings of Australian Shelducks flying overhead are no doubt 'a dime a dozen'; but, nevertheless, I like this recording for its own sake, but also because I was sitting there, in a grassy clearing between reeds and water, listening to the night, when the Shelducks flew over at 03:42, long before first light, when it was still dark, and the wind was just beginning to stir. (The photo was taken much later, at around 05:49). The lower-pitched voice is a male, the higher-pitched nasal voice is a female. And also because I was sitting in the midst of that part of the Reserve that is dedicated to duck hunters, expecting to hear and to record the worst. It was a surprise and a relief that dawn came, and not a single hunter was present, not a single shot was fired, not a single duck was killed. At least, not on my watch, through that one night and morning.

Snowdonia (Sunrise)

I've been recording throughout Deep Creek National Park (formerly Conservation Park) for several years, and throughout all seasons. This recent recording was different from any other I've made here. It was dominated mainly by Australian Ravens and Magpies, although a few other birds make an appearance, such as what I believe was an energetic little Brown Thornbill in the foreground, at one point. In other recordings made during the same morning at other nearby locations, Grey Shrike-thrushes and White-throated Treecreepers, amongst others, could be heard.

What I like most about this recording is the recurring, distant, beautiful, wistful call of a Magpie somewhere much farther up the valley: its song is sometimes occluded by the nearer Ravens and Magpies; and sometimes, in more quiet intervals, its song reverberates gently, quietly, and elegantly down the valley.

Can be listened to with speakers or headphones; but quality open-backed headphones are especially recommended.

Unprocessed and unedited recording (96/24 WAV > 48/24 FLAC).

Recorded on land of the Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri people that is now a National Park.
