Cowboy Solid is a very new musical and artistic project, but one that is instantly eye-catching. Born and raised in "grotty Watty (Watford fuckin' town)," Cowboy Solid has been working as a photographer and photographer's assistant for four years. You can tell he's in touch with the visual side of things through his meticulously curated Instagram profile, which is injected with his signature primary colours of red, yellow and blue. Meanwhile he's also been producing and DJing in the "bootleg silly hardcore scene" for the last two or three years under a separate alias. He's also fronted punk bands over the years, and sees the Cowboy Solid project as trying to put everything he's learnt during this time under one umbrella. He recently put out his first 'Spring/Summer 2021 mix' under the moniker, and his debut production emerged not long after as a break-fuelled rework of jpeg.love & Moodrich's 'Pleasure Times'. "Music inspiration for this project is going to try and be a mashed-together mess of Jersey club, ghetto house, Miami bass, baile funk and that '90s London rave sound," he explains. "I've got loads of stuff half ready but none of it really sounds like each other so I'mma just keep making tunes until I've got a group of cohesive ones to release as an EP!" "Outside of music I'm gonna be bringing my love for old school street racing, fashion, dystopian anime's and the drag and ballroom scene to the project somehow," he adds. His Dummy Mix opens on a nod to his "power colours" aesthetic, before running through an unrelenting, crate-dug blend of fiery rap edits, Jersey and footwork. Hit play below.

Midheaven Records continues its run of firsts in 2021 with ‘Shifgrethor / Konstant Kemmer’, the debut of Eora/Sydney-based producer Mx-Ai (they/them). The last decade has seen Mx-Ai move from playing in bands, to no-input mixing, to chopping samples and programming drums—a habitual experimentation both integrated with living, and consciously auto-didactive. Years of quietly working away have resulted in a warped bass music sound, drawing upon the sensibilities of musique concrète, jungle, dub and dancehall. Taking their names from concepts in Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’, ‘Shifgrethor’ and ‘Konstant Kemmer’ are a small glimpse into a larger world of sounds yet to be heard, where synths cling like vapour to structural beats, meticulously grooving and articulate. Astute sound design makes tangible a feeling suspended between excitement and anxiety, with sweeps of FX and minute rhythmic shifts keeping things on the move, ever-curious and rolling. This is an exciting statement of intent from a gifted artist.

AM: Let’s start with your album! Had such a whirl listening to it, how long was it in the making? What was the the concept behind it & what does your set up look like?

G: Thank you for the kind words! The album was around a 2-year project in total from the inception of the concept to finally being put through production ready for release. The concept originated from the beginnings of a personal spiritual journey that started 2 years prior to when I first started writing it, where I began to delve into philosophy from various periods of time, mostly being the Hellenistic period of Ancient Greek Philosophy, Buddhism and 1920’s Existential Philosophy to name the most predominant things I explored, along with the incredible world of psychology. Through making attempts to understand myself I began to make a connection with something greater than me – a kind of unifying bond that brings all of us and everything together as one, which the album title ‘Pulchra Es Elementis’ alludes to, translating roughly to ‘Elements Are Beautiful’ in Latin, where the elements are essentially what makes us who we are and everything else around us. The general mood of the album is quite uplifting, almost melancholic, which I think reflects the way life is most of the time; an underlying pessimistic, realistic perspective that I have learnt has allowed me to truly understand how beautiful the world can really be. We all experience some form of suffering, and I think that this is an important thing to consider about the human race; we are all bound together by this fact I think, and in a way I feel a powerful beauty around this idea that enriches my experience with the world. The setup during the production of the album was incredibly simple – an Akai MIDI Keyboard, monitors, and interface, my ancient Macbook Pro and Ableton Live 9. A lot of the production techniques I used on the album were sample-heavy, but I did use a specific set of VSTs, including Massive and Zebralette.

AM: Tell us a little about the mix, how and where did you record it? Did ya enjoy it? 

I recorded the mix at home in my studio (my bedroom) using a MIDI Mixer given to me by some friends (Thanks Neil and Jodie!) using Traktor on a sunny afternoon. I absolutely love recording mixes and taking the listener on a journey so the experience was great! When I record mixes I try to make each one different to the last, and this mix was centred around the more slower tracks on the LP, which are all featured throughout. I am a huge fan of slower tempos between 90 and 120 BPM for their more hypnotic, flowing nature and so I drew for a selection of tracks that followed suit with this energy, as the tracks off the album are made to capture this same force. There are a mix of older and newer tracks inside and it is cool to hear how different periods of music history from the last 10 years meld together so brilliantly! It is chuggy, meditative, warped and full of dense low end.


AM: We’re big fans of your label NHS too, it’s quite varied and all the releases are great. Was there a specific idea with it to start with?

Thank you! I had initially wanted to start a label when I still lived in Australia and cycled through a range of idea that didn’t stick. Nostro Hood System finally came to be when I considered my long-term love for Science Fiction and Fantasy. I imagined what it would be like to receive an audio artefact from an alternate galaxy; what would that music sound like? By this time I was deeply interested in the left-field realm of electronic music and it seemed fitting to take NHS down the thematic route. So Nostro Hood System is essentially the name of the alternate system much like our Solar System that occupies the universe and the records are the sounds that come from it. The team that interprets the sound files are Xenologists on earth who receive and transmit the audio into comprehensible sounds that our ears can comprehend.

“Don’t Ask When” twists 140 into something deliberate: snarling sublines, splintered percussion, and melodies that glint through the grit. Beneath it all, a lattice of percussive fragments and melodic dust builds tension in the gaps, giving each hit its own gravity.

Produced by Ezzrei, one of the few artists shaping dubstep from the Philippines, the track captures a tactile energy from the sub’s slow grind to the flicker of reverb in the high end.

"The C Powers sound is informed by years spent building electronics and collecting records in Chicago, honing crowd control skills in the foggy clubs of London, and helping foster a small yet respected community in the marshes of Savannah GA. Cici began their dj career at age 11 when they finally had saved enough allowance for a set of GLI decks and mixer that came bundled with a sampler. Their current sets often make full use 3 decks in order to toy with the notions of the "sampled" and the "live". While residing back in their home state of Georgia, Cici was holding resident DJ posts at Atlanta's HUNGER club night (with the esteemed TWINS) and their own Cape Fear in Savannah GA (initially founded with SafeSound). C was also the resident DJ for Savannah's own legendary and trashy House Of Gunt performance group who create cross sensory stimulation experiences involving gender blasting action and choreography and also brought in many talented selectors to their MIX events. C has been around.
