Letters to a Lost Poet

A raw and unflinching meditation on isolation and reckoning, At The Prow Of The Lifeboat is the first glimpse into flakebelly’s forthcoming album, The Boy In The Diving Bell. Stripped-down yet searing, the track drifts between hushed, palm-muted acoustic guitar and an aching string quartet, all anchored by flakebelly’s intimate, unvarnished vocal delivery.

A reflection on a lifetime of social missteps and unseen struggles, At The Prow Of The Lifeboat channels the weight of unfinished business into something both deeply personal and quietly vengeful. It’s a reckoning, a release, and a question left hanging in the air - what happens when you come calling for the ghosts of your past?

The album as a whole grows from the alt-folk roots of At The Prow Of The Lifeboat to more experimental, psych-folk territories, blending raw acoustic textures with surreal, otherworldly soundscapes. With its lo-fi aesthetic, first-take performances, and the imperfections of an ancient analog Akai tape machine, The Boy In The Diving Bell embraces its rawness, mistakes left in, and a uniquely unpolished atmosphere. For those drawn to the stark honesty of Elliott Smith or the simmering intensity of early Nick Cave, At The Prow Of The Lifeboat offers a haunting introduction to the diverse and immersive sonic world of The Boy In The Diving Bell.

Mass Of Time

Written for my brother, a lion a kindness, who showed me what it is to be truly loved. 

I wrote Joe, in an attempt to describe my grief, but grief really is impossible to describe, everyone’s relationship with it is unique and so very intricate in its outpouring and implosion. You can’t know it until it lands at your door. 

To try and convey the depths of grief, the picture of it, what it is truly like, it’s visceral manifestation, you can’t, you really can’t, nor can it ever really be truly understood. But I really, had in a natural way, wanted to try to with this song. 
Untimely bereavement grief means a life and family are left incomplete, unfinished, there is no solution. Not even close to having had enough laps around the sun, woken to a new day. There is no resolution. 

It’s now been over 6000 days and nearly 17 years since Joe came home and my hope in sharing the days, was that it might make people to see just why it pulls you apart, as it has, me. But also, I wanted to sing out loud just how much I love Joe, that too, like grief is infinite.

Joe my big bro is/was/will always be a lion of kindness, compassionate, selfless, he took notice of the little things, and a joy-giving ball of smiles, calming hugs and giggly shoulders. As kind strangers as to his friend’s or family. He showed me what love is, what it means to be truly truly loved, he was our protector. He showed what it is to live with adventure at hand and a giggle in the other. An honest man, only barely a man at 21.

This song began with Ken's oldest son, Jack, who laid down the basic rhythmic beat. Ken took over after that with the rest of the beats, though. Jack just graduated high school last week, and he's into hip hop and trap music, so he wanted to share some of it with his musician father, who is very proud of him.

  Tez was first up on this one, which surprised me when I went back and checked the workflow. He added the perfectly placed guitar hits throughout. Josh was next up, using his synth to add the falling bass line. Last, but not least, Terry came aboard, adding the moody, melodic, high register synth.

  When it was all finished, we asked out resident pro mixer, Stephen, to mix it for us. 

  This song was in its current form for about the past eight months. It was originally part of a series of vehicles Eclectic Collective composed for The Mysterious Decibel. He got caught up in life, though, and had to abandon the project. So, we sat on it, asking all the rappers we know if they'd be interested in having a go with it, but no one bit. So, with Jack's recent graduation, Ken revived it as a celebratory song for his son. It could still use some vocals, too, so think of this as an open invitation to anyone who want to do the honors. 

  We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it. 

  Oh, and just a side note for all of our friends who follow along with us, we will have  new one for you, the following Friday, the 11th. Thank you for keeping up with us!
