Mirrored Spaces

There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion.

Love is thus necessarily collective and expansive in the sense that it increases our power...

Man comes into this world knowing nothing, and leaves it knowing even less.

We seek destruction from the beginning, because it is waiting for us at the end.

Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.

It needs a body that is incapable of adapting to family life, to factory discipline...

Solon the lawmaker was a sage, but Orpheus the enchanter was a magician.

When music itself is helpless to save us, a dagger gleams before our eyes...

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

To "dance with" someone can mean many things - to perform together a sequence of movements, either choreographed or improvised, identical or interacting, repeating or not. Performed with music, this is art. With fists, it is pugilism. This piece is a bit of both.

LAY DOWN YOUR BURDEN (2015) was composed for and premiered by the Dutch ensemble Oerknal!. As Georges Bataille wrote concerning his transgressive novella Story of the Eye, “I began writing with no precise goal, animated chiefly by a desire to forget, at least for the time being, the things I could be or do personally.” Favoring recurrence over development, recognizing the weight of silence and the austerity of the materials – came together in an unintentional yet very true and clear rendering of the moment and the circumstances of the work. A new fault line born from an earthquake; the hidden patterns in glass revealed only by its shattering. This is a piece about entropy as a kind of coercive negentropy, about the desire to discover complexity in the evidence of its imminent demise. A catalogue of crushing embraces.

I am a composer living in Philadelphia. I am a founding member of the astute New York-based new music ensemble, counter)induction. Among others I have written for ensembles E-MEX (DE), Oerknal (ND), PART Ensemble (DE), Prism Saxophone Quartet (US), and the University of Michigan Saxophone Orchestra. as well as Daniel Lippel (guitar),  Evelyn Degen and Matthias Geuting (flute and organ), Jessica Meyer (viola), Caleb van der Swaagh (cello) and Tom Pauwels (guitar).
