When I was 12, I had my first experience with the police. Myself and two friends were walking to play basketball with our friends in the bordering white neighborhood. Soon after crossing over into that neighborhood, we were swarmed by cops. Four squad cars blocked the street and sidewalks. Each door was open with a cop pointing a gun at us through the window. It took me a few seconds to even realize they were talking to me. Once we were up against the fence, they searched us and asked questions. After they were done, my friend asked, “what’s going on?”. They replied, “we received a phone call about three kids walking down the street with a gun”. I wasn’t a kid anymore.

I never spoke about this experience to my father, nor my mother(RIP). And my friends and I rarely spoke about it, if ever. I suppressed the feeling of that experience for nearly 30 years. And it all came back when someone on social media asked, “when was the first time the police pulled a gun on you?”. I broke down in tears telling wife the story while at the same time reliving it. And all my wife could say is, “write about it”.

There’s a saying, “turning lemons into lemonade”. I feel like African Americans have been turning “Bloodshed Into Lemonade” for over 400 years. Making the most of horrifying situations. 

I also believe that we as African Americans need to stop destroying one another. It’s for us to build and lift one another up. Because I know far too many people that have been killed.

One morning, I woke up to video of masked men with assault rifles, Swastikas, and Confederate flags  raiding my state capital. It was a very alarming image to witness. There are terrorist groups that are  growing in America and it can’t be ignored. 

In the end, I hope this song sheds some light on my experience. I know there’s thousands of people out there who have similar stories. And I hope this song gives a voice to anyone who has been affected by racism, injustice, and inequality. Thank you.
