Take/Make the Time - 3 Groups of Performers

Dig Deeper was written to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Missouri University of Science and Technology. It tells the history of the school, from mining to engineering to nuclear research to space and beyond. A tune in the style of a mining song, and inspired by the school's motto "Miners dig deeper," serves as the foundation for the work as a whole. Thank you to David Samson and the MST band for their generosity and musicianship.

Serendipitous I was written for Thomas Schuttenhelm and is the start of a series of works for solo instrument and live electronics that features randomness, predictability, and feedback as a central focus.

Serendipitous II is the second in a series of works that focuses on randomness, predictability, and feedback. While the double bassist is performing, the electronics are recording small sections of audio that are then granularly reordered and played back at different speeds and directions, all of which are randomly chosen at time of playback. The result is then an environment where the bassist can improvise against a version of their past self, pushing the work forward in new directions with each performance.

Tarantella for a Dying Rose was written for Night Fall 2022 and depicts a rose dancing itself to death. Performance features Julie Haring on violin and Erica Nelson as the dancing rose.

Pile, for chamber orchestra and electronics, uses the Jewish lullaby “S’dremlen Feygl Oyf Di Tsvaygn” as its melodic inspiration, presenting it in fragmented, obscured, and varied ways. The text for this lullaby was written for a 3-year-old child who was saved from a 1943 massacre that left 4,000 Jewish people dead. While acknowledging the horror, the lullaby focuses on the child, and thus, the future. In Pile, the eerie resonance of the electronics represents the friends and family that we have lost. The orchestra is all of us, and it is our duty to keep their memories alive, to tell their stories, and sing their songs.
