Cidade Gente

Abaetê means good person, honoured person. It is an indigenous word from the Tupi-guarani. 

The Tupi people, a subdivision of the Tupi-Guarani linguistic families, were one of the largest groups of indigenous peoples in Brazil before its colonisation. Scholars believe that while they first settled in the Amazon rainforest, from about 2,900 years ago the Tupi started to migrate southward and gradually occupied the Atlantic coast of Southeast Brazil. 

This song is dedicated to all indigenous people, their ancestors and descendants.

Abaete

I once was aa popsicle seller. That was when I was about 11 years old, 32 years ago. An old man would make the ice cream sticks in his shed, at the back of his house. Once they were ready, he would fill up polystyrene boxes, the ancient of we call cooler boxes today, with them and then he would give those boxes to the kids from the neighbourhood, I was one of them, so we could walk about and sell the sticks door to door. The neighbourhood I lived in the the beginning of the 90s was very humble, the roads were not yet paved, the houses were mostly precarious and you would see very few cars passing by. I would grab one of those boxes and would walk around the neighbourhood shouting "Picoléééééé" which is the Brazilian translation to ice cream sticks and hoping to empty the polystyrene box as quick as possible so I could get another loaded one. The old man would pay us 0.10¢ per sale, the final price of the stick was 0.30¢. One-third commission, not bad at all for a first job at 11 and very fair rate as I assume the cost for the man to produce the sticks would be about 0.10¢! But I was not great in savings and ended up spending my commission buying Picolés for my own consumption! The atmosphere of this song ended up being a bit dark but those were certainly difficult but also happy times!

I composed this tune with my friend Rafa. He came up with a bass line for the first verse and from there our creative journey brought us to this final result. 

In this trip, we also had a couple of very skilled and creative musician friends jumping onboard. Rodrigo Abelha performing the drums (the guy played in Rock in RIo a couple of years ago with his band StormSons (check them out on Spotify!)) and producer and musician Kevin Barber @kebarb on some of the many guitars in this track. Both guys brought their own creative ideas for their parts which enriched the track even more. This is a multi-continental piece as the 3 people involved in the recordings are separated from thousands of miles from each other. It would be impossible to be done without the practicalities of today's online world.

Arcturus is a red giant star, the fourth brightest star in our night sky, approximately 36.7 light years from the Sun. According to the beliefs of certain New Age movements, Arcturians are a very advanced extraterrestrial civilisation from the Arcturus star system who wish to share their knowledge and wisdom with the citizens of Earth. They are described as other-dimensional, advanced star beings. Arcturians are said to be loving and peaceful beings who are willing to communicate and work with any soul that wishes to travel with them to a higher level of consciousness.

Currently, they are said to guard the Earth, helping heal the planet while raising its vibrational energy. Emotional, mental, physical and spiritual transformation are among their primary goals. It has also been suggested that Arcturians regularly incarnate on Earth, meaning they would have been involved in Earth's evolution. 

We named this song after the star and New Age belief as since the moment when we started producing this song, a year ago, we always felt in a intergalactic trip with all the moments the tune has.
 
If there's some form of life or intelligence in Arcturus, we don't know. But listening to this song with eyes shut, we can visualise whatever want.

This track is a fusion of Brazilian culture, rock and electronic music. We have the Berimbau, instrument commonly used in Capoeira sessions, as well as a set of Afro-Brazilian percussion including Zabumba, Surdo, Repique, Timbau and Cuíca. We also have a regular drum kit, electric bass, electric guitars and synths.

I wrote this song with my friend Rafael Chieza back in 2002 when we had a rock & roll band called Mahatma. Cidade Gente was originally written as a hard rock song. This new version is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that band that was never famous yet brought a lot of joy in our lives for many years with fun adventures and happy memoirs. looking back I can see we were very successful at having a good time and fun stories that will bring smiles for the rest of our lives.
