It’s hard to believe an entire decade has gone by since Claude VonStroke first released ‘Who’s Afraid of Detroit”. But believe it or not, we’ve reached the 10 year mark of one of the biggest hits of Claude’s career, and we felt it’s about time for some fresh takes on the track that helped launch VonStroke and Dirtybird.

For the 10 year anniversary, we tapped into the Motor City’s outstanding talent pool and enlisted an amazing lineup of Detroit artists to help us celebrate. Besides Claude VonStroke’s brand new 2016 remix, we also included mixes from techno icons Octave One, minimal techno pioneer Marc Houle (Windsor is close enough!), and the accomplished trio Visionquest.

Not limiting the Detroit based artist package to just the music, the haunting release artwork comes to us from Michigan illustrator Dan May. In addition, a dark David Lynch style music video comes from award winning Detroit director, Anthony Ernest Garth.

“Who’s Afraid of Detroit Remixes” will be released on the 10th anniversary of the Movement Festival in what city?

Something a bit different on Monologues this month as we partner with London's house/disco/garage mecca 51st State Festival to present a legend of soulful house music, @DJSpen. One of the most prolific and popular producers in that end of the spectrum, his career stretches back to the glory days of US house and garage in the mid-’90s, when he was part of the legendary production outfit The Basement Boys. He counts hundreds of production credits to his name, with collaborations alongside Karizma and Todd Terry and remixes for Michael Jackson and Diana Ross along the way. His Quantize Recordings and unquantize labels are two of the scene’s best-selling imprints, and with such a huge body of work behind him, choosing what to pick on this mix can’t have been easy. It’s an honour to have him as a guest.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I describe my sounds as being soulful, funky, disco, jazzy, feel good dance music.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

A plethora of people and entities influence my sound from Gamble and Huff, to Parliament Funkadelic, to Curtis Mayfield and Quincy Jones, to Soul II Soul, to DJ Premier, to Jazzy Jeff, Dr. Dre and the list goes on.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

This mix is a combination of many of the sounds I love to put together. Hard and gritty, to smooth and melodic dance cuts. It was a joy to put together!

Former gospel singer Chris Willis is well known as the powerful voice behind many of David Guetta’s chart-topping club anthems including, ‘Getting Over You’, ‘Love Is Gone’, ‘Would I Lie To You’, ‘A Little More Love’ & ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go’. For the new single ‘Top of the World’, Chris teams up with New York house music legend Lenny Fontana for an uplifting and soulful disco house anthem.
No stranger to crossover success himself, Fontana’s first crossover hit record ‘What You Need’ (Defected Records/Ministry Of Sound), under the name Powerhouse Feat. Duane Harden was a Top 10 hit in the UK. It was performed on Top of the Pops and the Pepsi Chart Show also recently cited by Calvin Harris as an early inspiration, when he began making music. Lenny’s house anthem ‘Chocolate Sensation’ (FFRR/Warner) was also a UK top 40 hit. Lenny has also had releases on seminal labels like Strictly Rhythm, Soulfuric, Nervous, Nite Grooves, Azuli & Distance.
With two artists of such a strong pedigree joining forces, it’s no surprise the results are outstanding. Willis’ amazing vocals and Fontana’s lush full musical production align seamlessly, leaving the listener feeling ‘On Top of the World’.
Another NYC house legend Junior Sanchez (S-Men, Brobot, Circus, Subjekt, Relief, Play It Down) steps up to the remix plate and ‘knocks it out the park’ with a dubby heads down driving take for club dancefloors.
