'Deph Threats' is the debut solo album from Hampton, Virginia native Dephlow. Linking up with Portland, ME producer Phoniks to create a raw 14-track, 55 minute soundtrack focusing on inequality, social injustice and self-reflection. A year removed from collaborating with hip-hop duo Awon & Phoniks to produce "Dephacation", 2014's upbeat onslaught of bars and metaphors, Dephlow has now stepped back to a darker place and put his ability as a songwriter on full display across tracks like Hard Times, Time Is The Teacher, Lost Girls and WWPD. Dephlow spits his stories over a soulful palette of Phoniks productions and enlists the help of F. Draper, Anti-Lilly, Awon, Envy Hunter, Tiff The Gift, Nehemiah Bell, and My Main Man Keion across the LP's 14 cuts. The result is a project that delivers powerful messages and soul-stirring personal stories over Phoniks signature gritty, soulful beats to create a debut album that will stand among the most powerful in recent hip-hop history.

Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a “formidable tandem” by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7” which quickly became a collector’s item. The association landed their song “Back To My Sh*t” (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank’n’Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco, 90’s hip-hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic movements coming out of Nick Wisdom’s adopted hometown of Montreal.  What’s resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood.  The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists -  J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand’s Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within.  The album will set the tone for the duo’s big moves this year, including forthcoming collaborations with Illa J and Pomo as well as tour dates in North America and beyond. 

Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Chris Mager, UK producer known as Kurus, from Surrey, currently living in Nottingham. He's come on most listeners' radar this year when he released some collaborations with up and coming artists. His work with vocalists such as Madson Project has everyone asking for more. Without question he's one of our most talented musicians and we expect big things from this artist.

Kurus's music is a concoction of sad, floaty melodies that sit on top of deep, after-hours basslines. Titled "Dreams", this artist's second EP features 4 productions channeling the vibe of his musical universe, with crisp kick drums, punchy snare hits, and floaty atmospherics emulating. The producer carres' the essence of the original composition into uncharted territory with finesse, evident in his tracks, like his excellent track produced with Too Much. His unique design of blending electronic ambience with elements of hypnotic instrumentals creates a perfect vibe of hip hop beats and chilled out sounds.

Including perfect collaborations with talented vocalists like YudN, Beth Duck and DREEZE, this album is an array of ambient melodies and captivating vocals, which is about keeping the soul and hip-hop's roots true and paying homage to the ones that helped start it. From start to finish, amazing singers creates precise, smoothly woven stories of love and struggle in all phases maintained by Kurus's laid back production and steady rhythms.

"This EP has been my most time consuming work, starting in July, creating loads of different tracks and considering loads of different sounds, but ultimately finishing with these 4 tracks, 6 months later, that I am very happy with. It’s been difficult finding the time as music is really just a hobby for me, but Im so thankful its finally all come together.I wanted a hip hop / r&b / electronic feel and think I have achieved this. I can say that this EP truly represents my sound, but I take inspiration every day from hundreds of artists that I listen to every day.
