My new song 'Mother Tongue (feat. Mirrah)' is out now. You can stream it on Spotify, Apple Music & JioSaavn. It's the latest track from my new upcoming album, South West, which will be released on July 17.

This song is deeply personal for me. I think of it as the 'Survive' of this new album. I feel great shame in not being able to fluently speak my mother tongue language, Punjabi.

With that said, I know enough of it to get around on my own in Punjab, and I can read it slowly. But it's the nuances, the layered understandings that I miss out on, and that's where real connection to culture & history is.

I take full responsibility of letting it go when I was younger. I didn't know any better. Now I do. To me, it's one of the most valuable things. I hold onto it tightly. And I try stay connected to it in a few different ways, by speaking it when I can, but also by learning traditional Sikh music through playing the rabab, a classical strings instrument.

If I could go back and speak to my younger self, I'd tell him to keep his language close, to maintain that fluency, to be confident in and proud of your language and your culture. Standing out may not seem like something you want at that age, but as you get older, you realise just how important it is to be yourself 100%. And your culture is a big part of that.

Not just in a superficial, visual kind of way. But in a way that fulfils your heart and soul, by tapping in to hundreds of years of music, art, poetry, story-telling and knowledge.

I truly hope this song resonates with you, whatever your experience with language is.
