Mutant Radio (Tbilisi, GE) monthly residency, episode #32, December '23. As the winter cold kicks in, here's one hour of Enno Velthuys. Not much is known about Velthuys, a somewhat obscure character in the world of Dutch electronic music. He released four tapes in the ‘80’s, three of them on the EXART cassette label from IJmuiden, ran by Hessel Veldman and Nick Nicole. Velthuys was a hermit, creating beautiful melodic ambient in the bedroom of his mother’s apartment. Some pieces are reminiscent of a classic dungeon explorer game while others may have a more surreal, cinematic feel. Sadly Velthuys passed away in 2009.

Sloppy Astrid started making mixes during the pandemic. Her dearest friends from the Spettro family (a wonderful corridor for sonic explorers, as they call it, in my hometown of Brescia, in Italy), had launched a radio project called PsyMedTapes to help maintain a sense of community during the surreal situation through the shared listening of music. She acquired a taste for it and now makes a new one, every once in a while. 

Her mix for Metamorphosen is a dynamic journey with different tempos and styles, from various eras. She presents us with a rich and colorful bouquet in the most diverse colors. But all her songs are united by an enormous quality and a magical emotionality. And so, through mystical chants, desert guitars, post-punk beats and Italian ghost disco, Sloppy Astrid lures us deeper and deeper into the forest.

Invisible Inc once again presents another incredible full-length album from the talented Double Geography. Following on from 2020's “The Indoor Gardener”, the new LP “Open Water” is bathed in a similar blissful atmosphere.

Double Geography aka Duncan Thornley (one half of Weird Weather and studio engineer at MAP Studios), following the success of his debut album had sent Invisible Inc demos of his second and third album, which although excellent in their own way, the label reluctantly declined on the basis that the music didn't quite fit into the spectrum of the label's output. However, this fourth studio album fits the bill perfectly. Leaning towards the label's more ambient and laidback output, the album is themed around water, transience and escape and sounds as unshackled and free-flowing as you'd expect...you can almost feel the breeze in the air and the sun on your skin.

There is a noticeable progression in the music from his previous releases, this time featuring several additional musicians to compliment Thornley's electronics with live instrumentation...adding a complexity and depth to each of these compositions and an overall 'organic' quality that makes these new pieces sound like quite a departure from the first album. Fretless bass, clarinet and saxophone decorate the music with refrains and melodies that have been enchanting our imagination even in their absence since first hearing them.

“I wanted to incorporate some live musicians on this release so called upon some of the talent I'd worked with as an engineer at MAP Studios...that was the main drive behind the music for this release. The tracks are named after things that relate to either leaving behind canal boat living, e.g. Goodbye Great Escape (Great Escape was the name of our boat) or memories from a trip to Hydra, Greece. All sorta water related… On one of our walks around the island we ended up sharing a beach with Pierluigi Collina hence Famous Italian Referee! That track felt like the weirdest of the bunch so it got designated the weirdest name / memory!” (Duncan Thornley, March 2024)
