When asking Timoka how he would describe his music he reacted very on point: “Well, it's music above all. Sometimes it is quite hard to tell if something is really music or just sound design or plain, unorganized noise. Therefore I choose to not describe my music. That's luckily not my concern, but for the people listening to it and reviewing it."

Often it is indeed hard to distinguish music from sound, where both things can be interpreted differently, depending on your background and your definition of what music is. It is an interesting discussion, because there is absolutely no winner or loser in it. Timoka's sound is indeed hard to describe. It varies from techno to ambient, from warm to industrial, and from organic to straight forward. We've asked him to partake in our podcast series, because disregarding his undefinability, his music stands alone in beauty and he is capable of telling emotional stories with sounds you wouldn't associate with that storytelling capability. Sit back, let go of your musical conventions, and get carried away. - MF

Vessels' original incarnation for "Elliptic" was quite something. Not normally known for their forays into electronica, the rock band's new direction could have sent them down the one way street to oblivion. Instead, the outcome was 8mins of true hypnotic bliss; sounds that were custom-built for that eyes-shut, euphoric passage on the dance floor.

The band’s 3rd album Dilate was recently signed to Different Records and gets re-released in 2016 with a caboodle of extra edits and remixes. One of those remixes happens to be by Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow. Grounded, or should we say lifted by that same somniferous feel, the makeover is amped by a puffier drum and low-end backbone. The movement is transformed from starry-eyed rapture to head-nodding beatitude — music for the mid-night rush and beautifully done at that.

"Overload, overload" barks the repeated refrain on Yila's Silver Bear Recordings debut. Yeah, it's a phrase that sits nicely within a chorus, but this isn't just some aesthetic gap-filler. Speaking on the affect of social media culture, 'overload' is Yila's way of  commenting on the sense of “detachment and loneliness” that our Facebook feeds and tweets promote.

“There’s a weird sense of us all talking about the same things but really not engaging with important subjects enough", he adds. "It feels like someone else is already doing it so why should we bother standing up and fighting for what we believe in? Just comment on a Facebook post and it rewards the brain.”

That concept gets a new skin under Kasra V's control. Inspired by the italo-disco jams he's been pulling out in his own sets, the NTS regular's take has a strong metropolitan whiff. Like some nocturnal journey through a cityscape, it's reflective and pensive in all the right places.

Ce rituel est pratiqué pour les hommes Tamasheq et Sonrhaï : il marque le passage de l’enfance à l’âge à adulte, la prise de responsabilité de l’homme au sein de sa communauté, et de l’époux dans sa famille. Guitares électriques, chants, tindés et percussions, avec une des plus fabuleuses voix d’Afrique de l’ouest.
