How emotional can you get on a dance floor? Love Letters - Cast Off is part of our decades-long exploration of this question. A stunningly confident four track EP that harnesses the power of deep rave with twisted up vocals, acid lines and techniques drawn from the best of classic house topology storming propulsively into the future. Love Letters is NY-based designer and musician Maxime Robillard whose creative process for both design and music often begins from the same consideration of function, “What is the use, what is the environment. How do I want people to move through or move to the sounds? Movement is integral to my creative process.”

Robillard goes on to share the particular story behind this EP: “This EP was made after a major accident in my life. Two of the tracks were made with both arms in a cast, and in a way this can be listened to as a love letter to my connection with this kind of music, with the community I have found on the dance floor, and with particular sounds. It acts as a document of my gratitude that after the accident I am alive and well and can still enjoy the music and world that I’ve dedicated so much of myself to.”

It’s Belgium vs. Malta for the second split EP on Gated, with Datawave’s tough take on electro kicking off the A side and Sound Synthesis’s cosmic machine music on the B.

Both producers are currently making waves with numerous releases on labels like Fundamental and Nebulae, with their complementary yet distinct styles of electro brought together for the first time.

Perhaps the most obviously peaktime track, Datawave’s Pulsar sounds immense, with a wriggling bassline and cracking drums that’ll cut through on a system.

Breach Out takes things darker and deeper, with gnarly and hypnotic synths leading you on some tripped out journey into a dystopic future.

Sound Synthesis, meanwhile, lightens the mood with Lost in Orbit, but retains that sense of moving into the future. Except this time it’s somewhere beyond the stars.

That said, EP-closer MH System is the kind of classic 4am stomper every DJ needs, with a low-slung bassline and spaced-out samples guaranteed to keep the floor moving.

Two machine worshippers have been gathered for the occasion : on the A side, Discothèque Sauvage delivers a triptych of idm-ish electro titles, tinged with deep rhythmic melodies. B side takes us off the electro land for a perfect rest on the edges of uf0’s complex mind.

crouds formed in 2017, pursuing the declared goal of playing superior club sets. They dropped their debut “Cabin Pressure” in 2020 on Neuzeit Records. Another EP on Intumi and remixes for Truncate and Ben Haviour followed the same year. Andreas Schuller and Jay Nagel are part of the splendid Sonic Ground Kollektiv, which – outside of Covid times – stages regular workshops, streamings and club nights. For RFR they collaborated with Max Delius. From this liaison the sizzling debut track “Larking” arose. Max Delius also is a member of the Sonic Ground Kollektiv and moreover known as part of the live-techno project “Numpad”
“No Service“ starts the round dance and comes straight to business. Bass is king - magnificently rumbling breakbeats, caressed by ambient sounds in the background. A couple of scanner sounds and distorted drone effects – voila, it’s a banger!
“My Mind is a Knife“ unfolds considerably calmer. A straight, slow-downed beat, electronica and ambient tones now dominate the foreground. Compared to the opener it’s like the second infusion of a green tea: Less edges, but more opulence in the fine nuances. 
“Ruff Stuff” embodies everything that we love about techno. Straightforwardness without letting versatility slip. Here again the characterising melodic patterns, which stand out for Crouds. Sounds like a spontaneous live set by Christian Vogel and Robert Hood who coincidentally ran into each other at the club. Nice track! 
“Larking” combines the best of crouds and Max Delius. Broken beats, in this case arranged more minimally and accompanied by rather abstract sounds. Darker, more mechanical and with significant references to early UK hardcore. A touch of melody at the end sticks true to the blueprint of this EP and finishes this RFR release.
