Ontal - Combat Engineering EP (Overdraw)(Preview)

The new imprint for Stroboscopic Artefacts: Terzo Giorno – or Third Day – by Italian producer Donato Dozzy. It is an EP of great textural dexterity, traversing the moving and the misanthropic.
First track ‘Il Canto Della Maga’ presages the onset of Part II’s kick drum with mordant wind chimes, tinkling outside a house of pain and disturbance. The chimes reverberate around impressions of capacious depth – a distant factory whirring, lorries creeping in a tunnel – and that depth is incessantly, resolutely emphatic. And on that goes to ‘...Part II’, an immediate thrust into the deepest corners of techno. You can hear the sweat on the walls, the rumble in the speakers, the almost jubilant high-end synth rubbing against your skin. Vocals and/or metallic manipulation pour in half- way in. And then, as if summoned by the chimes outside the house, cease slowly. The third eponymous track is another made for the floor, and has a reasonably friendly upper line. Do not be fooled, however: a snarling squelch gives way to a scarily saccharine synth, incising with a jab two times a bar. A funkier beat slowly emerges from a distinctly off-beat one, bringing the piece to a natural, if not nice, conclusion. The final track, ‘Sotto Ma Sotto’, comes in like a train with an alarm going off. Its machine-like run, jumpy in tone and beat, is as delicate as its kick is deep. The alarm, meanwhile, fails to err: it is determined and charming, a call for heavenly climes and ecstatic moods. This is a wonderful track, built on insistence and executed with precision.
The chimes having run out of puff, this is a faultlessly incessant record. It is tempo up, both feet to the floor.

Donato Dozzy 'Terzo Giorno' [SA023]

Manuel Años, AKA Psyk, has much to lay claim to within his relatively short career, having already played at Berghain, Tresor and Stockholm's Fabriken, as well as having himself as a focal point of Madrid's techno scene. His approach seeks to continually purify and refine his sound, and with 'Distance' - his debut release on Mote-Evolver - he melds together new forms of rhythm and expression with the kind of maximal composition and hard energy that the label has honed. The four tracks of 'Distance' pulse, pound and thump their way forward while also showcasing a distinct metabolism that develops throughout this varied release.

The A-side, beginning with 'Distance', establishes a direct, compelling energy that's carried forward by echoing synths that become underlaid with an ever-growing bass. Envelopment is the true characteristic of 'Distance' as it compresses its energy, channels it forward and establishes a strong sense of momentum perfect for any number of following tracks. 'Isolate', the A2 track, properly expresses its title with isolated, intense pulses of warped bass that eventually blend into one another to deliver a highly hypnotic, immersive feel. This sense of repetition creates a spiraling sense of progression that hooks onto the listener and draws them in.

'Rdmn”, the first track on the B-side, brings in a sense of experimentation as it uses different percussive patterns while it searches for its moment to strike. The dented funk of the main bass line ebbs and flows until it finds its groove and immerses itself in it. On the heels of this comes 'Main', the final track that is no less saturated with energy than all the rest. It's pure switched-on dance floor thunder, and surges forward with a straight-forward simplicity. As Psyk's first release on Mote-Evolver, 'Distance' establishes the momentum both for the budding Spanish producer as well as for his supercharged productions to come.

Lucy & Silent Servant - History Survivors [Mote Evolver - MOTE034]

The label boss The Advent teams up with Spiriakos and they deliver a great release for Kombination Research. The original mix of 'Point Of No Return' is a smooth techno production that builds early on with some nice beats and some subtle effects. Filterheadz deliver their remix on the flip and maintain some of the quirky vibe in the drum work.

<p>Cubix makes his debut statement on Kombination Research with a solid techno EP. Starting this EP is &#8216;Rasp&#8217; which is a very an aggressive techno track. Heavy beat mixed up perfectly with a dark percussion on the foreground. &#8216;Kinetix&#8217; is a stilted techno track, with a dark beat and skulking bass that makes this one a techno killer. A magical EP from Cubix, which he knows the definition of techno and exposes two techno anthems on Kombination Research.</p>
