In 1977, a group of Tatar-Bashqort workers, teachers, and engineers appealed to all western countries through an anonymous letter sent to Radio Freedom, in a desperate gesture to draw attention to the colonial politics of the Soviet Union against the Indigenous languages and reforms in the educational system. This letter, written in a very emotional language, has never reached the international agenda and was silently stored in the Blinken archives in Budapest for almost 50 years, until I found it by pure chance earlier this year. Sadly, history repeats itself: the amount of people speaking Indigenous languages in the so-called russian federation is continuously decreasing. Reading the letter one gets a feeling it was written today, echoing the recent twists of colonial legislation.

This work is a deeply collaborative effort in carving out the collective presence, convened alongside people of four generations and many sensitivities. I have invited contemporary Tatar and Bashqort language activists to re-enact the original letter that has been translated from Russian to Tatar, Bashqort, and English. Mansur Möhammätshin, Zilya Biqtimerova, Ziliä Qansurá, Tansulpan Buraqaeva, Çiksezlek, Deenar, allapopp, Dinara Rasul(eva)  generously shared their voices and exposed different positions within their mother tongue. A self-sufficient sonority of the native languages, a form of history in itself, is blended with an effort to imagine a Tatar-Bashqort soundscape. 

The labor of contextualization stands as an important tool of recovering the past and opening a possibility of imagining a rooted future. Bashqort filmmaker Tansulpan Buraqaeva, in a spirit of indigenous indifference to the compartmentalization of knowledge, has been both the translator, musician and one of the recorded voices in the project. The work is accompanied by a text of a Tatar researcher Leisan Garif that gives an insight into the history of colonial education politics on the Volga-Ural land. The humor, spiritual support and persistence of Masha Sarycheva, a co-curator of this project and a dear friend, made this community come true. Last but not least, the thoughtful sound design by sound artist Omar Itani took place in Lebanon, Beirut, thorn by continuous attacks by the Zionist entity. Necessarily translocal, this collaboration calls for urgent and simultaneous recognition of other than capitalist-colonial logics across the world.

Layering Indigenous instruments, archival and staged sounds, Appeal to All Western Countries is a heartfelt attempt to address the international community once again. 

The project is part of Safe and Sound. Season 2 commissioned by the duo League of Tenders as part of the Nomadic Program 2024–2025 of Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art (Middelburg, the Netherlands)

A peacock dreams of being a poet. It ponders, trying to shed its colors, turning its feathers into a gradient of flesh. On the other side, a poet longs for the peacock’s colors; a galactic blend of earth, forest, sea and sky, as seen from a vantage point. The poet can close their eyes and absorb the knowledge of the finite. Yet, trapped in a monotone concentration, eyebrows plucked down to 111, they miss much. The peacock, dipping deep into the ink of the poet's pen, sails through a tube into the poet's body. A fluttering storm erupts, reversing the roles: the peacock finds itself under arrest warrant While the poet, his utterance collapsing into a cry; haunting, like a peacock's wail struggles to describe the world.

طاووسٌ يحلم بأن يكون شاعراً. يحدق، متخلصاً من ألوانه، محولًا ريشه إلى تدرجٍ لوني من اللحم. من ناحية أخرى، يتوق الشاعر إلى ألوان الطاووس؛ مزيجٌ مجريٌّ من الأرض، والغابة، والبحر، والسماء، يُرى من نقطةٍ عالية. يمكن للشاعر أن يُغمض عينيه ويمتصّ معرفة المحدود، لكنه يفقد الكثير، محاصراً في تركيزٍ رتيب، حاجباه مشدودان إلى ١١١.

يغمس الطاووس في قطرات الحبر المنسكبة من قلم الشاعر، ثم ينساب عبر أنبوب إلى داخل جسده. تندلع عاصفةٌ مرفرفة، فتُعكس الأدوار: يجد الطاووس نفسه تحت مذكرة اعتقال، بينما الشاعر، وقد تقلّص تعبيره إلى ضغيب حاد، يعيقه لوصف العالم

Abstraction​ ​as​ ​a​ ​hyper​ ​material​ ​enables​ ​a​ ​meta​ ​existence​ ​of​ ​motion,​ ​CORE​ ​REMISSION​ ​will unpack​ ​this​ ​notion​ ​through​ ​the​ ​mediums​ ​of​ ​painting​ ​and​ ​techno.

Abstraction​ ​modulates​ ​reality,​ ​yet​ ​to​ ​enact​ ​it​ ​collectively​ ​it​ ​requires​ ​a​ ​physical​ ​field.​ ​The​ ​architecture​ ​of clubs​ ​and​ ​galleries​ ​often​ ​offer​ ​this​ ​territory.​ ​A​ ​public​ ​cube​ ​is​ ​always​ ​a​ ​place​ ​of​ ​latent​ ​potentials:​ ​near visibility,​ ​against​ ​almost​ ​constraint.​ ​One​ ​could​ ​liken​ ​these​ ​sites​ ​of​ ​collectivity,​ ​i.e.​ ​the​ ​club,​ ​the​ ​gallery,​ ​the cinema​ ​to​ ​voluntary​ ​prison​ ​cells​ ​for​ ​those​ ​seeking​ ​a​ ​moment​ ​of​ ​abstract​ ​hyper​ ​density​ ​outside​ ​of​ ​their constructed​ ​reality.

YOLO​ ​often​ ​comes​ ​to​ ​mind​ ​when​ ​I​ ​think​ ​of​ ​abstraction.​ ​Thousands​ ​of​ ​novel​ ​or​ ​risky​ ​acts​ ​becoming reduced​ ​to​ ​a​ ​universal​ ​(un)unique​ ​after​ ​sound:​ ​YOLO.​ ​This​ ​neo-word,​ ​YOLO​ ​is​ ​both​ ​coltish​ ​and​ ​euphoric, as​ ​is​ ​any​ ​scene​ ​slang.​ ​The​ ​word​ ​seems​ ​to​ ​have​ ​hijacked​ ​both​ ​yellow​ ​and​ ​hello,​ ​mashing​ ​them​ ​into​ ​a hyper​ ​density​ ​gesture.​ ​A​ ​bold​ ​linguistic​ ​action.​ ​It​ ​renders​ ​both​ ​a​ ​moment​ ​of​ ​adrenaline​ ​and​ ​resignation​ ​into a​ ​cute​ ​contemporary​ ​cipher.​ ​The​ ​act​ ​requires​ ​a​ ​desire​ ​to​ ​become​ ​YOLO.​ ​Desire​ ​must​ ​bleed​ ​between​ ​life and​ ​the​ ​abstract.​ ​Knotting​ ​into​ ​turbulence,​ ​ruptures,​ ​and​ ​autonomous​ ​functioning​ ​cells​ ​to​ ​be​ ​able​ ​to​ ​exist.

We​ ​can​ ​at​ ​this​ ​point​ ​likened​ ​desire​ ​to​ ​a​ ​scripted​ ​life​ ​scenario​ ​and​ ​abstraction​ ​as​ ​the​ ​overlay​ ​of​ ​all​ ​possible realities​ ​of​ ​the​ ​plot.​ ​Eventually,​ ​the​ ​script​ ​will​ ​turn​ ​into​ ​clandestine​ ​gossip,​ ​and​ ​we​ ​all​ ​know​ ​gossip​ ​is​ ​more stimulating​ ​than​ ​life.

An​ ​exhibition​ ​or​ ​set​ ​list​ ​by​ ​its​ ​very​ ​nature​ ​is​ ​temporary​ ​and​ ​queer,​ ​much​ ​like​ ​gossip​ ​thus​ ​it​ ​remains​ ​a functional​ ​proposition.​ ​Be​ ​it​ ​a​ ​colour​ ​field​ ​or​ ​a​ ​re-verb​ ​the​ ​process​ ​of​ ​abstraction​ ​is​ ​ultimately​ ​an​ ​extension of​ ​the​ ​customary​ ​room​ ​with​ ​a​ ​view,​ ​a​ ​suicide​ ​of​ ​the​ ​now,​ ​a​ ​stage-death​ ​that​ ​just​ ​stood​ ​up​ ​for​ ​the​ ​encore.
