French-based Virtual Forest Records delivers an intercontinental ode to its corner of the international underground with 'Diplopia', a 13-track compilation featuring collaborative contributions from pole to pole. With increasing synergy, France's psy-tipped fringes mirror that of Australia's, pushing a depth in sound and space that each country's raves and DIY festivals have become known for.

French producer RM Estali's collaboration with Naarm/Melbourne's LOIF, 'Cutting The Rind', is a perfect example of this synergy. Chunky snares lay the groundwork for a near conversational dubstep wobble, before it settles into full psy-breaks swing. 

Of the collaboration, RM Estali shared that "Declan (LOIF) came to play in Paris at Les Amarres last year, and finished his set with some nasty dnb tracks. When I found out we were gonna make a tune together, I was like, 'what don't we have a shot at making a track like that?'"

Hello everyone, this marks the first mix I’ve recorded since coming to Spain. I’m just over two months into living here now, and am finally finding enough balance in my life to work on music again.  I packed a limited, suitcase sized studio setup: A pair of small unpowered monitors, my Scarlett interface, a new Pioneer DDJ-400 midi controller, my macbook and headphones. Almost every piece of this setup has broken down or had some annoying issue since I got here… 

The monitors have a little wire you clip between them which is very finnicky on my desk and intermittently disconnects.  The DDJ-400 has a fucked up left pitch control, necessitating sync mode. I broke my macbook screen by accidentally hitting it with the airpod case in my jacket pocket. By pure dumb luck, this was resolved for free because I had applecare (forgot that I did) and due to some currency exchange issue with my US account and their EU system, they weren’t able to charge me. Nothing to report with my headphones or interface.  In any case, I’m glad to be finding my footing again and grateful to be making friends here in the music scene. As usual there’s no particular narrative for the tracks in themselves, just an hour of what I was able to squeeze out of myself in a productive flowstate one afternoon. There’s some 2010s instrumental grime throwbacks in the beginning that are very nostalgic though.  Anyway, Enjoy!
