Milan, Italy, 1983. In the midst of the 80’s economic boom, 
which gave an injection of optimism after the heavily political 70’s,
a group of young local musicians meet every night in a basement 
to rehearse and record a peculiar breed of Italian disco music.
Originated from the ashes of various other projects, 
and rooted in the broader jazz-funk tradition,
the group creates music which is equally inspired
by contemporary fusion as well as by the first wave 
of the italo-disco sound. Fast forward 35 years 
and the genuinely mediterranean flavor of Qvark’s 
demo recordings are still enjoyable for the groovy quirkiness 
of a project which has been to long forgotten.
After an intense work of audio restoration of such demo tapes, 
heavily affected by time, Early Sounds is pleased to present 
a compilation which is an important find to define the sound
of late 70's and early 80's Italian club sound.

DJ SCM - Introducing Tony Pianola In Luce Artificiale [Lp, Mini-Album]

A year after his debut outing on the label, Max Essa makes a welcome return to Hell Yeah with the Han zon Roc EP, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings.

Essa is of course the long time UK talent who has become a part of the Balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like Aficionado, Music for Dreams, and his own Jansen Jardin. This is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea.

Opener ‘Han zon Roc (Midori Coup)' is an epic 12 minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. They grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. It’s like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut.

‘How You Showed Me Everything’ then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. Withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing.

Last of all, ‘Rain Bird's Alfalfa Jam’ is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. It’s light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of Essa works so brilliantly escapist.

Alexander Robotnicks 2013 italo disco classic gets the remix treatment courtesy of tastemakers Hell Yeah Recordings and an all star cast. Scandi-disco hero Prins Thomas turns out an edgy disco cut with rasping bass and hip swaying drums. Man of the moment Bawrut’s version is a pumping old school house jam, complete with analogue bass and an unhinged lead line to bring the madness. We however plum for Belfast's The Vendetta Suite weirdo take. His rippling synth puddles and sci-fi motifs are brilliantly rich and glowing that fill you with warmth for a mind expanding and other wordly experience.

It seems an eternity since City Fly’s last release with homegrown bad boy The Last Trip To Gandahar back in the summer of 2018. The EP received love from underground cats and mainstream players alike - even appearing on BBC Radio 1 and receiving rave reviews in both DJ Mag & Mixmag. 

Moving into 2020, they launch the first in their ‘Fly Family’ compilation albums, calling upon an array of underground all-stars from around the globe to make up this 12 track album of previously unreleased / original cuts. The album is drenched in deep, soul flecked bombs ranging from the jazzy hip-hop intro of Cologne's Ugly Drums who teams up with Detroit MC :brownstudy to the heads down, no nonsense 'Warehouse Shit' from Simbad.
