Last month Canicule Tropicale crew (Philippe Noël, Kobal, SugarFace Nene and myself) has played at "L'Inspecteur Épingle" for an other crazy night.

Here is the one hour set I played during this event.

I mixed some Cumbias from Colombia and Panama, Plenas from Puerto Rico, Brazilian Carimbo and Samba Rock, Merengues from Santo Domingo, Ethiopian Soul, Kenyan, Angolan, Ivorian killing stuff and a Kadans from Guadeloupe.

Calavera Volume 1

The first time I was introduced to Ethiopian music, I believe that, like many, it was through the "Ethiopiques" compilations of the French musicologist Francis Falceto. My first reaction was: "my god! From what planet does this music come from, it can't be from planet earth!" This sound is so unique, it makes you go from tears to dance... 

This music comes from the planet earth, it comes from Ethiopia. 

Very quickly, I had the desire to go there to see what made this sound so particular. In October 2017, I flew to Addis Ababa to spend three weeks there. I met some key people without whom my stay would not have been the same. Thanks to them, I could feel on the spot a part of the spirit of this music and also find some of these so rare records.

This mix is in memory of this trip, as a tribute to my friends and also to share the emotions that I have on this so unique music.

From the sambas of Brazil to the breezy grooves of Guadeloupe, Haiti’s soulful rhythms, the hypnotic beats of India and Senegal, and the haunting beauty of Ethiopian jazz. Each record told its own story, tracing a map of warm, vibrant soundscapes.
