In this mixtape, we celebrate the Mediterranean as an inexhaustible source of inspiration, deeply
intertwined with our Neapolitan identity. Geographically located at the heart of the region, Napoli
has long served as a crossroads of conquest, resistance, and cultural fusion. This legacy of
dominance and defiance has imprinted a unique DNA onto our city’s culture, creating a culture
where contrast is not merely accepted but embraced as a defining feature.
Our set begins with a poignant recording of an elderly woman reflecting on the Black Madonna, a
singular figure among Napoli’s countless Madonnas. Despite being rejected and considered an
outcast due to her skin, she remains the most beloved by Neapolitan devotees—a powerful
metaphor for the city’s tradition of embracing the marginalised and celebrating misfits.
As the show unfolds, we weave archival farmer chants from the late 19th century with the rhythmic
pulse of traditional tarantella, blending seamlessly with Middle Eastern folk music. This exploration
underscores a profound truth: rhythmically, melodically, and spiritually, we all trace our roots to a
common source—the Mediterranean Sea. Through this dialogue of sounds, we celebrate the
shared heartbeat of the region, challenging borders and affirming unity in diversity.
Throughout this hour of music, we navigate the intersections of heritage and innovation, honouring
the collisions that define us while imagining a future free of imposed boundaries. With this mixtape,
Circolo Psiconautico pays tribute to the vibrant patchwork of voices, sounds, and ideas that
compose the Mediterranean’s ever-evolving cultural mosaic.
