On August 18th, 1997, Tom Merriman walked through the doors of the building that bears his name… TM Studios. During the recording sessions that followed, Tom created one of the best loved oldies jingle packages in recent history… Overture, for Bill Stedman, at Oldies 104.3 WOMC in Detroit.

13 years later, in 2010, Bill Stedman is now at WMXJ – Majic 102.7 in Miami. He came back to TM with a challenge… to take Overture, and make it even better. So that’s exactly what we did! Introducing… Overture, Remastered!

Our prompt was inspired by John Cage and we were to find samples of rain, cars driving, and static between radio stations or record them ourselves, then make a track with only those sounds.

The Junto is a place for me to try new (usually brand new) things and share results, no matter how rough they are. This track is a documentation of my first ever jam with Cheat Codes V2 run on my Norns Shield and controlled with Grid... Also the first time I ran the script... and read through the manual. This script has some depth and I need to dig in, but in the mean time, try to get through this awkwardly choppy amalgamation of sound.

Disquiet0479 Truck Radio Rain

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
