"On IPOP, Organic Analogue uncover a hidden gem of dubbed-out electronica and fried-circuit techno from deep in the late-00s Manchester underground.

Beppu is the work of Andrew Hargreaves, and IPOP gathers together three EPs he put out in 2009 in limited runs of 50 CDrs. At the time, CDrs were the format of choice for DIY electronic music. The lo-fi resurgence of tape was a way off, and CDs offered maximum fidelity at a minimum cost. Beppu is emblematic of that era and the nascent democratisation of music distribution, when technology meant you could do the entire process from creation to delivery yourself. Dubby, outsider electronica especially found a home amongst this network of independent operators, where similarly spirited artists like Pub and Remote_ capitalised on the format to put out their insular techno-not-techno.

You can practically run your fingers over the grainy textural influence of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus in the blown out pads and tones that shape out the space around Beppu, but Hargreaves was making something far less derivative than what we generally think of as 'dub techno'. You might find a tweaked acid line or warbling 101 adding a braindance tweak to 'Speed Tolerance' or catch a hint of Jan Jelinek's strung out micro-loop reveries on 'Consumption'. There are no straight-forward formulae being adhered to — the staunch independence of Beppu's circumstances rings true in the seductive sonic silt that swirls around these mixes. Comfortably ahead of the trendy distortion boom of the 2010s, Hargreaves elicited an evocative kind of noise from his mixes that becomes an emotional layer within the music.

These are mixes which delight in pushing frequencies the 'wrong' way, respectfully guided to a final form by the careful hands of Hargreaves' long-time mate Miles Whittaker of Demdike Stare on mastering duties. Alongside his work on the mastering, Whittaker and Sean Canty took to Hargreaves' source material to create two Demdike versions that round out the album's fourth side with their much-celebrated verve and leftfield swagger.

Scuffed and soulful, wrenched from unknown zones and rooted in the craft, IPOP is everything OA lives and breathes. In line with past archival digs with DJ Guy and Jean-Louis Huhta, we're proud to help shine a light on the lesser-known talent of Beppu and give these incredible sonics the pressing they deserve"

Review: Following acclaimed releases by Jeremiah R and HVL, Organic Analogue is proud to present an extensive new release from a true underground hero of UK electronic music, DJ Guy. 

For this latest exploration of Guy's music, Team O/A were keen to represent the full spectrum of his sounds, both stylistically and chronologically, across two different formats as a nod to the decades he has spent immersed in music. Recent releases have focused solely on tracks Guy recorded in the 90s, so they wanted to devote the vinyl part of the release to some of his newer productions.
The tracks on the Structures 12" prove that the same spellbinding atmosphere, swooning melodic content and crafty arrangement flex is as present in Guy's contemporary work as it is in his earliest tape rips. Elements of Drexciyan electro and UK ambient techno can be felt throughout, but they're delivered with an equal dose of ingenuity that is all his own.
As well as his plentiful techno output, Guy equally turned his hand to some crucial experimental jungle over the years. Rhythms 94/99 harks back to the era of Black Secret Technology, Plug and Depth Charge, all phased, diced up amens and dreamy pads that form a link to Guy's 4/4 work while once more demonstrating how on point his productions were at such a seminal time. The tape they have put together contains ten tracks recorded by Guy between 1994 and 1999 as well as an additional remix by White Peak that draws upon all the tracks for source material.
In addition, they wanted to document and explore the fascinating story behind Guy's music in more detail, and so produced an A5 book that features an interview and track notes alongside old flyers and studio photos from the earliest days of Guy's life in music.

"We hope that in some way this serves to document the tireless work of an immensely talented artist who has never created for anything but the most honest of intentions. Even if his incredible productions should have been more widely enjoyed back in the day, at least they're getting the recognition they deserve now."

UK DJ and producer Rohan Walder, a.k.a. Randomer furthers his exploration into deep, spatial techno on Dekmantel’s UFO imprint. Fusing together two-step rhythms, cavernous beats, distortion, layered kicks, and an attentive detail to sound design, Randomer delivers an uncompromising array of abstract, yet destructive techno tracks. 

Randomer’s approach to techno has always mantained a bassier, obtuse approach to sound, with polyrhythm beats that have helped set his sonic identity apart from his peers. Having released the Running Dry EP on DKMNTL UFO in 2016, Randomer is firmly establishing himself as one of the label’s favourite artists, with a resounding appearance at the Dekmantel festival in São Paulo, and a prime slot awaiting for him in the UFO tent at this year’s festival in Amsterdam.

The latest EP by the UK producer kicks off with 'Van Pelt', which skips on the off-beat at just over 130bmp, and textured with kicks that sound like two robust, metal dumpsters being hit together. Littered in the background are gongs, random percussive sounds, and something very alien, making it the perfect track for the UFO tent. 'Shadow Harp' is quintessential techno, with yet more thudding, dark-kicks layered against a syncopated plucked and jarring bass. 'Dissolve' drip and oozes with a sunken undercurrent of dystopic-melancholy, driving in ruptured reverb with a tribal percussive foundation. Final track 'Slicing’ dares to take things a little further, as the rounded-hollow kicks punctuate against more metallic, and analogue sounds - like a war of machines, set to a rhythm of abstract, free-flowing gust of techno cuts. Throughout the four-tracks, Randomer showcases his innate ability to excite and surprise with dynamism, and cutting sounds, with a technique that has been well-honed throughout the years. As he stated in an interview with Resident Advisor in 2016; “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

Having launched in 2016, DKMNTL UFO has released critical cuts from Peter Van Hoesen, Anthony Parasole, and Voiski.
