Here on Labor Of Love EP covert disco spy Labor Of Love delivers three cuts on the That's What We Doin' EP, and all of them look the American soul sounds of the glittering 1980s - "Favours" kicks things off as a slow jam with chiming keys, clavinet grooves and smooth n breezy vocals, next the title track is a faster golden boogie jam, the kind that Metro Area looked to for inspiration and lastly "Just For You" is the kind of raw bass strutter that would have set the coolest New York funk clubs alight back in the day.

HB015: Javi Frias - Shining Bright EP w/ Labor of Love dub

Javi Frias is rapidly turning into one of Europe's most consistently on-point re-editors. Equally as inspired by funk, soul, disco, boogie and house, the Madrid-based producer has previously released on Street Edits, Giant Cuts, Editorial and Midnight Riot. Here he pops up on Hotbox Boogie with more floor-friendly reworks of overlooked or obscure boogie, street soul and disco-funk gems. While largely re-tooled to suit house dancefloors, Frias' edits pay due reverence to the source material, with cuts such as "Shining Bright" and the superbly soulful "The One" emphasizing the original tracks' killer grooves. Picking a standout track is tough given the high quality threshold throughout, but we're particularly enjoying the heavy, extra-percussive Dub of hands-aloft disco-boogie gem "The Way".

LOL002: Featuring Sleazy McQueen, Dicky Trisco, Labor of Love

the Labor Of Love series continues with more dubbed out disco made with love. Volume 2 sees the label enlist a couple of edit heroes in the form of Sleazy McQueen & Dicky Trisco, as well as serving up a speaker freaking spectacular all of their own. Whiskey Disco head honcho Sleazy McQueen soars in from his Orlando home to take control of the A-side here, making expert use of EQ and filtering to take the horn led hustle of "The Wrong Virrey" to the next level. Over the corner UK edit maestro Dicky Trisco gets slow and low with "And The Groove Goes On And On", treating us to the sleaziest joint this side of the old town. Wonky white-funk guitars ride the titular groove while that buzzing bassline and monosyllabic vocal slip something under your tongue. The label heads themselves take over edit duties on the last track, hitting us with sweeping strings, summery filters and snapping percussion on the low slung disco of "After Dark".

HB017: Kiu D - Love Player EP feat MKV

Following recent excursions on Masterworks Music and Rebel Hearts, Kiu D returns to Hotbox Boogie, a label he's graced multiple times over the years. As usual, the four tracks on offer - three of which were co-produced by pal MKV - blend extensive samples from original disco and boogie records, with original musical elements. He begins with the clipped guitars, familiar vocal samples, and throbbing nu-disco synth bass of "Funky People", before delivering a breezier chunk of cheery disco-house in the shape of "Love Player". "Spank" puts a heavyweight disco rocket under the backside of Jimmy 'Bo' Horne classic "Spank", before the package is completed by the Bohannon-in-dub throb of "Funky People (Labour of Love Dub)".

The seven-track missive begins with a chunk of electric piano-laden samba/jazz-funk magic courtesy of Nik M, before sometime Hot Digits and Midnight Riot man Frank Virgillio offers a more piano and percussion-laden chunk of sun-kissed Brazilian magic. Labor of Love gets the disco juices flowing via the cowbell-heavy shuffle of disco funker "Like I Do", The Funk District reach for the Clavinets on hazy roller "Baby Got It" and I Gemin smothers a tasty groove in liquid synths and deep house flourishes on "Oh Baby". To round things off, C Da Afro rearranges a warm and groovy electrofunk jam and Rica lays down some colourful nu-disco deepness.
