Solstice blessings everyone! Here to keep your body moving on these longest nights, a revamp of a psybreaks mix i did several years ago under my short-lived psybreaks DJ alias, 'Xoomi' ^.^ Published during this summer on Mixcloud, but now that i've got a Pro account back on here, i thought i'd upload it.

It was psybreaks that first pulled me into the world of psychedelic festivals, and part of my creative development from 2007-2015 involved learning how to produce electronic music from psybreaks and tech funk pioneer extraordinaire, Hedflux.

In 2014, underground breaks connoisseur, curator and mix wizard Quextal invited me to do a guest mix on his Quexotic Adventures internet radio show (the show that had inspired me to start my own webcast, New Moon Grooves). The mix included one track produced by myself during my psybreaks years, a skippy, glitchy little number with a sample of Sylvia Plath reading her prophetic feminist poem, 'Mushrooms' (https://vimeo.com/33107001).

Quexotic Adventures Guest Mix (2021 Version)

A sublime selection of dancefloor beats and downtempo dubs from around the globe, Mixes + Mavericks features seven remixes by Pitch Black, two live tracks that couldn’t be more different in nature or tempo, one seriously unorthodox situation (an unauthorised remix of a remix) and a track in between states, all highlighting the breadth of the duo’s sonic palette.

Whereas their previous Rarities + Remixes collection was predominantly rooted in New Zealand, Mixes + Mavericks is undoubtedly a more international affair, with all the remixed artists hailing from the northern hemisphere. Many of the connections are the result of the duo’s touring and festival appearances around the globe: they first met Gaudi at a gig in Japan, Animat and Nick Woolfson (Sounds from the Ground) at The Big Chill festival in the UK, while downtemple duo Desert Dwellers were encountered in the Californian underground. 

Other connections were more straightforward: Brighton-based Ink Project (run by Kiwi Jez Lloyd) approached them to remix “The End” and Mexico’s Sudden Reverb was introduced by label-mates Deep Fried Dub. Meanwhile Mike bumped into Radioactive Man’s Keith Tenniswood (of Two Lone Swordsmen fame) while he was getting a 7” record cut. 

Uber-producer/Killing Joke bass player Youth features in two very different ways. First up is Pitch Black’s pulsating dub mix of his collaboration with Italian producer Gaudi, from their Astronaut Alchemists album. Then there is his unsolicited remix of epsilon-blue’s 1999 remix of Speech, over which he added bass, beats and blessings.  This mash-up lurked for years in the archive under the title of Helmsdub, but only as a corrupted mp3 file. Thankfully a little detective work discovered that, much to everyone’s surprise, it had been released as Speechless (Big Circle Flat Pain Remix) on a 2004 CD compilation. A copy was tracked down, the tune was carefully re-mastered and then correctly named.

Mixes + Mavericks also features two very different live offerings: Notting Pill is a dose of atmospheric moodiness from a rare ambient set at Notting Hill Arts Club in London, held to publicise the upcoming showcase of New Zealand music at Fabric in 2003. The banging G202, meanwhile, was captured by Andre Upston at Rippon Festival in Wanaka, NZ at the turn of the millennium, and later broadcast on Radio New Zealand. It was a track that, despite being a staple of the live show for many years, was never finished, and following software updates and data dumps, the only version that exists is this live recording.

It's a Future Dub is a similarly embryonic track – eventually it became It’s the Future Knocking, from the Filtered Senses album, but here it’s a fascinating hybrid caught midway between creation and completion. Many of the elements of its future self are present, but there is a whole lot more going on, making this a fascinating signpost on a possible road-not-taken. 

Beautifully accompanied by Tim Prebble's Cyanotype images, Mixes + Mavericks is a showcase of Pitch Black’s sonic diversity as remixers and maintains the trademark production aesthetic that has won them thousands of fans and filled dancefloors around the globe.

Love Long Beach Festival - Live (July 2022 - Noise Stage Saturday)

Sonic scapes of sound and substance may rouse the keen ear into discovery. When one really listens, everything is music, and when one really experiences, one is everything. This is the theme of "I The Beholder", the absolute power one has on their perception and Aeonium's desire to use this for good, for the manifestation of beauty. 

Over 4 years in the making, I The Beholder incorporates absolutely everything the Dutch multi-instrumentalist has in his repertoire, from several instrumentations on piano, santur, handpan and many more, to tape, synthesizer and field recording, all fuzzed through the creative process of digital production. From oriental house to wicked shuffles, from dubby basslines to ambient textures, this album represents the variety of music and their possible fusions when the listener sets their mind to really listening and taking this process as an active endeavor. Greatly enhanced by the beautiful sounds of Nienke Deiter, Frodi Fransman and Namasterri.

The masterfully crafted work of Israeli producer Ammonite is an impressive debut on the label, he takes us through a deep and mysterious psychedelic labyrinth of glitched out dubby psytech at its finest. At times playful and funky, at others chaotic and frenetic, Father Gum offers up a remarkably copious taste of emotional depth and intelligent beatwork.

With enough zwips and zwurps, zwoips and squizzerps to get thoroughly lost in, FatherGum is a true psychedelic treat. Yonatan Ammonite has shown his fierce and assiduous tenacity to deliver top-shelf psyglitch music in this release. It's easy to just sit back and sink into the sounds or make way to the dancefloor and move around to the steadfast head-bobbing, toe-tapping rhythms that sit comfortably over the deep, thwubby basslines.

Father Gum is one of those pieces that can be played over and over again, bringing forth each time the discovery of new and interesting psychedelic details. Even more, as much of a delectable treat for the intellect as this EP is, FatherGum also presents melodic soundscapes that steadfastly maintain a pulse on the emotional intelligence that transcends the intellect and reaches deep within the heart.

Dawn is a sweeping cinematic score based on the first book of the Lilith’s Brood trilogy by the legendary Octavia E. Butler. This album serves as my musical interpretation of her profound and haunting tale—one of loss, survival, and evolution.

The story follows Lilith Iyapo, who once lived peacefully with her family in the Andes Mountains—until a devastating nuclear war obliterated humanity. Centuries later, Lilith awakens aboard a mysterious alien vessel, under the watch of the Oankali—an advanced species driven by an instinct to heal and evolve through genetic merging. As the last remnants of humanity are studied and prepared for a second chance at life, not all agree with the terms of this new beginning.

With themes of love, sadness, hope, and conflict, the music in Dawn is meant to transport the listener—whether or not they’re familiar with the book. You’ll feel the quiet sorrow of a ruined Earth… the awe and unease of first contact… the strange, electric connection between Lilith and the Oankali being Nikanj… and the tension of a species on the brink of transformation.

Raul Jordan is the artist behind the Lab’s Cloud project. Born in 1978 in Valencia (Spain).
Raúl began producing Psychedelic Trance as PSYCHO ABSTRACT with many compilations and
three albums in well-known labels. And after some years, in
2004, Raul starts a new project focused in Ambient & Down Tempo music under the project's
name: LAB'S CLOUD.
His style in words of the listeners is: a smooth organic ride, sweet, deep, riding, floating,
beautiful and delicious music oriented to chill outs, with space atmospheres, some chilling
vocals, some ethnic sounds, ethereal flutes and acoustic recordings (percussion, guitars..etc)
that make a sublime fusion that culminates into an aural experience. A definite trip for the soul!
The first single "Esmeralda" appears in 2005 in the compilation Chillum 4 (Agitato Records)
motivating great interest in many international labels. (All releases bellow).
The live performances is a very important item for Lab’s Cloud, for that reason, Raul makes
real live, improvising with synths and adapting the sounds according to the answer of the
audience. 
Since several years, Raúl is working as R+D engineer, developing professional audio
processors (EQ, Compressors-Limiters, crossover...) for Lynx Pro Audio. Actually with his
experience as sound engineer is offering his mixing and mastering services (Abstract
Studios), who demand it.
