Freedom is something we all seek, irrespective of where we come from. This Future Rust Community Mixtape celebrates the artform of the handpan, its origins and the uncertain but exciting path that lies ahead for our beloved instrument. This piece represents the complexity that surrounds this time and a hopeful future full of awe and wonder - as you will hear from the soaring sounds of the bansuri flute (performed by the world class Indian fusion musician Darshil Shah).

"Forge Ahead" is a jam-style piece that I originally wrote for my first handpan, an Australian-made creation known as the 'Pi'. After acquiring my Saraz, I decided to re-adapt the 12-bar melody to the new pan, and add extended groove sections to feature moments of handpan improv as well as the wonderful cajon playing of Tsoof Baras. This song also features the unique percussion instrument known as the asalato, beautifully played by Tsoof.

"Dance Like Nobody's Watching" is one of the first solo pieces I wrote on my Saraz C Minor 11 handpan. I finished writing this piece after attending PanOz 2016, Australia's first handpan gathering, where I learnt a bunch of new patterns and sounds (thanks to these incredible handpan players: David Kuckhermann, Adrian Portia & Jeremy Diffey). 

The focus of the piece is to merge together my drum kit background and love of improvised music with my handpan playing, ultimately creating a track that melds together groove, melody and improvisation. The title of the track simply relates to being yourself, embracing your strengths and having confidence in your abilities (although I'm a terrible dancer!).

Dance Like Nobody's Watching - Saraz Handpan Solo (Live)

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only Brian Frasier-Moore. A drummer/producer/musical director that really requires no introduction, Brian has recorded and toured with some of world’s greatest entertainers including Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Usher, the Backstreet Boys, among many others.

It’s safe to say this man knows a thing or two about peak performance, taking care of his health, touring, preparing both mentally and physically for a show, and finding longevity and fulfilment within the music industry.

I’d like to share with you some of the highlights of our interview, which really focused on 2 areas:

1.	Physical health & wellbeing (injury prevention & risk factors, body awareness methods) and;
2.	Mindset (overcoming performance anxiety, pressures of performing, the importance of having optimism, positive energy and a selfless approach to making music).

Unfortunately, there were some issues recording this interview (my Skype call recorder sadly decided to misbehave on the day of the interview) but a big thank you to Steve Thornely who was able to recover and clean up a lot of the audio, which ultimately was captured through my iPhone next to my studio speakers. So I apologise for the inconsistencies with the audio! I'm certainly very glad that I was able to rescue the audio and present to you these key highlights because Brian's insights are worth listening to. Thanks again BFM!

This timeless piece is from Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, which Sophie and I have reimagined for handpan/piano duo. This was a lot of fun to put together (thanks for the challenge Soph!) and I look forwarding to exploring more of this in the future.

Consider supporting the The Stairwell Project  as we launch into 2021 with low funds but high ambition. Reimagining clinical spaces since 2015 at the RBWH and now St V’s.  

Words from myself (unreleased song titled Your Journey’s Not Alone) inspired by my time in the RBWH cancer wards & coincidentally my own health journey. Interesting to see my own connection to this project move from observer to participant to patient. Patients, staff and musicians are exploring this space together. Look forward to reconnecting with the Stairwell in 2021 ❤️
