my love for mixing and motorcycles emerged around the same time. i wanted to find a way to bridge them. so smart rider principles was born. with each mix i try something different. sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. this is my laboratory. thank u for listening :)

i've been feeling lots of emotional ups and downs recently, so this month's mix is on the moodier side of things. that's why i decided to bookend this one with current joys. a friend of mine introduced me to their album "a different age" last fall and i've been pretty much obsessed with them ever since. nick rattigan's songwriting exists somewhere at the intersection of elation and disappointment, and, well, it's been pretty relatable. i've also just been in a kind of indie rock mood and have found myself revisiting albums i was listening to a bunch in middle school and high school. this was back when i was spending all my time digging for cds at castlewood public library in colorado (shoutout to the librarians there who were keeping the racks filled with goodies!). so i included a couple tracks from that time, too.

recently, i've found myself coming out of a bit of a dry spell with dance music and i'm once again feeling inspired. i've been spending more time experimenting with the mixer, working on mixing drills, and honing my pitch riding technique. in an effort to reflect this energy, i pumped up this mix with as much joy and funk as i could pack into it (and there's a lot there!). i'd like to think that this is the kind of set that i'd like to play out on a big sound system to a room full of friends. i definitely drew a lot of inspiration from my favorite dj and the greatest mixer of all time, spencer kincy, on this one. i'm always so blown away by the sheer adrenaline, soul, creativity, and technical prowess of his playing style. so i tried to embody that in my own way here. i hope you enjoy listening to this as much as i enjoyed making it! :)

just some tracks to help pass the time as we move through the day. i drew some inspiration from a movie called "News From Home" by chantal akerman. the film is comprised of a series of still life shots of nyc in the 70's while letters written by the filmmaker's mother are read aloud. the letters detail a mother who very much misses her daughter while you watch these ghostly, mundane scenes of a nyc that no longer exists. it's a very simple but heartbreaking film. the spaciousness and simplicity of the movie influenced how I approached the pacing of this mix, which is very slow. i hope you enjoy :)

the sounds of unworlding is a commitment to a new line of musical inquiry with obvious nods to andrew weatherall’s “end times sound” and dj marcelle’s “another nice mess.” but the term unworlding has been borrowed from the queer theorist jack halberstam. he uses the term to describe the willful embrace of entropy as a counter-strategy to the colonial logic of world building and modernity’s orderly impulses. the problem with world building, halberstam says, is that it cannot imagine new worlds; it just imagines worlds along the lines of what we already have but with new members. so he proposes an aesthetics of ruination. it is not until we unmake this world that we can begin to imagine what comes next. what would “world” look like, jack asks, if imagined through the unraveling logic of entropy?

as we can see from the schematic logic of urban planning, the cadastral map of land tenure systems, or the cameral science behind forest management, our obsession with the quantized grid logic in djing reveals our seduction with the aestheticization of power and control, which we should be extremely suspicious of. given that nothing in life is symmetrical, why is our attitude about djing characterized by straight lines? the sounds of unworlding proposes the destitution of the dj in favor of thinking without mastery and the entropic power of the clang, not as instance of error but as a productive event worthy of closer examination. everything else is just piss in the river

cien aguas

ciénaga is a DJ based between Seattle, WA and Elko, NV. Coming from a background in performance, he wields music as a tool to invoke the theatre of the mind. For his REDEFINE mixtape, he does just that. Using a combination of pitched down trance bangers, bass-laden tech house, and obtuse ambient thumpers, he carves pulpous textures and evokes the spirited play of shadows in the mind's eye. This mix is designed to be listened to on a long walk or while lying down in bed with your eyes pinched shut where you're free to imagine the convulsing vibration of your limbs on the dance floor. Not dissimilar to Denis Lavant in the closing scene of Claire Denis' film "Beau Travail," the mix becomes a meditation on the incongruent bedfellows of bliss and frustration bubbling beneath your eyelids and pores in a twisted dance that gestures the close of one chapter and the start of another.

It was commissioned by REDEFINE magazine (@redefinemagazine), an interdisciplinary publication dedicated to "conscious growth thru long-form arts journalism," in anticipation of LONGEST NIGHT: SOLSTICE CEREMONY 2020, taking place on December 21st, 2020.

For the second annual LONGEST NIGHT, Northwest Film Forum, Holocene (Portland), REDEFINE magazine, Crash Symbols Records & Seattle Documentary Association join forces to present five virtual rooms filled with music, movement, films, and meditation. Choose from five different Zoom breakout rooms of entertainment throughout the evening, each featuring a different thematic curation.
