my love for mixing and motorcycles emerged around the same time. i wanted to find a way to bridge them. so smart rider principles was born. with each mix i try something different. sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. this is my laboratory. thank u for listening :)

i've been feeling lots of emotional ups and downs recently, so this month's mix is on the moodier side of things. that's why i decided to bookend this one with current joys. a friend of mine introduced me to their album "a different age" last fall and i've been pretty much obsessed with them ever since. nick rattigan's songwriting exists somewhere at the intersection of elation and disappointment, and, well, it's been pretty relatable. i've also just been in a kind of indie rock mood and have found myself revisiting albums i was listening to a bunch in middle school and high school. this was back when i was spending all my time digging for cds at castlewood public library in colorado (shoutout to the librarians there who were keeping the racks filled with goodies!). so i included a couple tracks from that time, too.

recently, i've found myself coming out of a bit of a dry spell with dance music and i'm once again feeling inspired. i've been spending more time experimenting with the mixer, working on mixing drills, and honing my pitch riding technique. in an effort to reflect this energy, i pumped up this mix with as much joy and funk as i could pack into it (and there's a lot there!). i'd like to think that this is the kind of set that i'd like to play out on a big sound system to a room full of friends. i definitely drew a lot of inspiration from my favorite dj and the greatest mixer of all time, spencer kincy, on this one. i'm always so blown away by the sheer adrenaline, soul, creativity, and technical prowess of his playing style. so i tried to embody that in my own way here. i hope you enjoy listening to this as much as i enjoyed making it! :)

just some tracks to help pass the time as we move through the day. i drew some inspiration from a movie called "News From Home" by chantal akerman. the film is comprised of a series of still life shots of nyc in the 70's while letters written by the filmmaker's mother are read aloud. the letters detail a mother who very much misses her daughter while you watch these ghostly, mundane scenes of a nyc that no longer exists. it's a very simple but heartbreaking film. the spaciousness and simplicity of the movie influenced how I approached the pacing of this mix, which is very slow. i hope you enjoy :)
