Used the original ESA sonification recording to extract the frenquencies I wanted, added a drone tone as the cover element, layered 3 tracks, 2 of which I pitch-shifted.

Funny, so far it's been an unusually warm december here in Ireland (at least for Irish standards), yet here I am immediately thinking of rain for this project.  Mind you, it's raining outside now, so nothing changes - much.  

Structure is very simple: three raw Irish rain recordings one after the other.  I left in all the 'dirty' bits, which I find as I listen also transform into the odd, artificial rain drop.  For the opening I chose to use the moment when I raise the gain on the channels, it works like some sort of intro, of rain curtain opening.

I liked the idea of posting something unfinished that "leaves room for something else" and that has potential for collaboration. I know the instructions suggested instrumentation, but I thought it might be interesting/fun to go the musique concrète route and see if anybody might be interested in joining in. Inspired by the photo, I recorded the sound of chair legs gently swaying on a parquet floor. I then looped a section in Ableton Live, and worked on creating a progressive effect that would fade into noise and grain and give an abstract sense of time, or of the object getting older and consumed. It can be considered a rhythmic track (in a very loose, soft way), so looking forward to hearing what it will be matched and layered with.

Moving Chairs [disquiet0315]

There's something intimate about improvising on someone else's creation, while at the same time not knowing much about them and enjoying no physical proximity. This was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.

For the second part of this project I chose to work with tigrinya's track 'An Old Rocking Chair'. I was very attracted to the processed textures of the music box, which I feel projected a sense of time passing on the surface of the object. So I focused on adding to that sense of time passing on a more 'macro' way by adding two different synth pads. The first picks out the A-E-D pattern in the track, at first following it quite faithfully, then slowly detaching and improvising. The second pad comes in halfway through the track, and is sharper in texture. 

I chose to quietly complement rather than come in heavily, and leave space for the beautiful micro textures of the object. Headphones recommended.

This exciting new piece will look at memories not as fixed narratives from the past but as emotional experiences that create transforming collisions with the present."

La Cosa Preziosa (Susanna Caprara) is a soundscape artist and field recordist originally from the south of Italy and based in Dublin, Ireland.  

Part of her work is focused on the creation of short-form audio works that explore poetry, humour and the unexpected, through the exclusive use of her own field recordings. These works take the form of narrated fiction, experimental composition and micro documentaries. 

As a soundscape designer she composes original works for large scale productions such as live performances, radio productions and gallery installations. Currently working on a soundscape for the contemporary dance piece 'Invisible Histories' by Mary Wycherley featuring sculptures by Rory Tangney and opening at Limerick City Gallery of Art in summer 2018.

Recent projects include Onironautica (RTÉ Lyric FM commission for Art's Birthday 2017, finalist in the EBU Ars Acustica Prix Palma Award), composing a soundscape for a Lucien Clergue photograph as part of Landscape/ Soundscape at Penn State University (USA) and co-curating 'Mean Time', a live performance inspired by the women of 1916 (Richmond Barracks and live broadcast on RTÉ Lyric FM, nominated for an IMRO Radio Award and a New York Radio Festivals Radio Award).
