This week's podcast is featuring Sean DeLaney. Sean is currently the Executive Director for the Philadelphia Wings of the NLL. He is no newcomer to lacrosse as he spent his college days down in Chapel Hill, playing for the University of North Carolina before continuing on to the MLL where he suited up for the Denver Outlaws. We talk about how despite never being in the NLL as a player, how did he come to running the front office for one of the marquee franchises in the sport.

We recorded this at the 2018 US Lacrosse Convention on the heels of announcing Paul Day as their head coach and GM. Sean Delaney - Know the Game Ep. 1

Bill is an NLL player, currently with the Buffalo Bandits. When we spoke with him, it was at LaxCon this past January of 2018 as he was preparing to suit up with Team USA Indoor in their scrimmage that weekend. He is working towards trying to be a member of that team for the 2019 WILC being held in British Columbia next fall.

Bill has some excellent insight into our game and also has an electric personality, which has created a large social media following. In this episode, we discuss how Bill entered and stayed in the NLL, what makes him successful as an athlete, and much more.

Bill O'Brien - Know the Game Ep. 2

Coach Moran is on his second season as the Head Coach of UMBC Men’s Lacrosse. He started off his coaching career at Navy Prep. From there he moved back to his alma-mater as the offensive coordinator at Maryland. HIs offense averaged 11 goals / game over his 6 year period. His next move was to Loyola where in 2016 his offense average 12 goals / game. In June of 2016 he took over at UMBC for Coach Zimmerman after 23 years.

Joe Yevoli spoke with Coach Moran two days before their victory over an undefeated and #1 ranked, Albany. During the call they talked about how he handled coaching the Navy Prep team by himself. What he learned his first few years at Maryland. And how he’s approaching his new challenge at UMBC.

Brett Bucktooth: GameChanger

Joe Yevoli was fortunate enough to get to pick the brain of legendary lacrosse mind, Coach Bill Tierney.

Just incase you’re not familiar, Coach T has earned himself a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of lacrosse coaches. From ’88 to ’09 he served as the skipper for the historic Princeton Tigers before relocating to Denver, Colorado to uncover the potential of the DU Pioneers and lacrosse in the West.

Coach Bill Tierney was a 2x All-American and a winner of the USILA National Championship as a player before winning 6 National titles as a coach. All this, and so much more, earned himself in multiple lacrosse hall of fames including the US Lacrosse HOF in Baltimore, MD.

In this episode Joe talks to Coach Bill Tierney about things like how he got started with coaching, who he modeled his coaching style after, and how he developed the Princeton Defense.

Today on the show we have Tom Palasek. Tom is from Rocky Point High School where he holds the record for points and assists. He's graduate from Syracuse University. He played at both Johns Hopkins and Syracuse. Today, he plays in the MLL for the Atlanta Blaze.

He’s an MLL All-Star and he was part of the 2015 New York Lizards MLL Championship team.

I played with Tom for a few games on the Long Island Lizards. Tom is not only a great teammate, he’s also a great guy to be around as you’ll hear in this interview.

Tom Palasek: GameChanger

This week's episode is with Kevin Rice of the Atlanta Blaze. Kevin is a former Syracuse Lacrosse player who is now in his fourth MLL season. Kevin shares how he was able to go from a small high school as a player who did not specialize in lacrosse into working his way onto the field as a starting attack. As a senior, he worked his way to winning the award for the nation's top attackman, the same year Lyle Thompson won the Tewaaraton as an attackman in Albany.

He shares his thoughts on the MLL compared to the NCAA in terms of pace, coaching, and how fun it is for spectators by comparing his experience as a player in both systems. On a personal level, while in the MLL, he also suffered a major injury for the first time as a player and describes how he worked his way back from it.

Kevin also has just completed law school and discusses why he chose a more traditional career path instead of going fully into lacrosse right away. We hope you enjoy the conversation and learn a little more about the game from a player's perspective.

Kevin Rice - Know the Game Ep. 3

Today on the show we have the Head Coach of the University of Albany Men’s Lacrosse team, Scott Marr. Coach Marr is on his 18th season as head coach of Albany. During his time at Albany Coach Marr has coached two Tewaarton Winners, 29 All-Americans, 6 Tewaarton Finalists, and 8 America East Players of the Year.

In 2017, Albany’s offense ranked as high as #4 in the nation for the second straight year. Albany is currently the 2 seed in the 2018 NCAA tournament. They play Richmond on Saturday in the first round.

Coach Marr is a graduate from Johns Hopkins. He started his coaching career at Delaware. He then moved on to be the assistant coach for Dick Edell at Maryland for six years before moving on to the Head Coaching job at Albany.

Whether Coach Marr knows it or not he had a major impact on my lacrosse career when I was a camper at Maryland Lacrosse camp. During out talk we had the opportunity to talk about his entire coaching career, how empathy and compassion play an important role for him, and who transformed for him, what it meant to be a head coach.

Annie is from Towson, Maryland, played lacrosse at McDonogh High School, and went on to be on of the first class of recruits to play at Campbell University. Annie reached out to me wanting to share her story of experiencing a career ending head injury after having too many concussions on the field. Concussions in lacrosse are not uncommon, I had two minor ones in my playing career, and with the nature of the sport, they are at times unpreventable. At this point girls and women’s lacrosse rules only require the eye wear goggles, although there is a push toward more helmet based headgear that could help with reducing the number of concussions players experience. Annie describes the journey she went through dealing with chronic symptoms, the decision to no longer compete, and how she still managed to graduate on time and be a part of the team.

In today's episode of Going Offsides, Nick and Ryan learn more about what Army Lacrosse is all about, how Coach Joe Alberici runs a successful program, and the unique hurdles servicemen have to overcome to achieve their goals in sport.

Silva was essentially born to play Army Lacrosse. Despite his family’s best efforts to convince him otherwise, he knew Army was the only place for him. With both parents having attended West Point themselves, they wanted to make sure that Silva had come to the decision to attend on his own.

A bit of a late-bloomer in college, Silva really hit the scene during his junior year. In 2019, he collected 30 ground balls and buried 39 goals. Silva followed up with a team-high 22 tallies and 15 ground balls in 2020, only to have the season cut short by coronavirus lockdowns in March.

Despite being one of the nation's top players as a senior, his future in professional lacrosse was unclear. The United States passed a law that allows service academy graduates to play professional sports and delay their duty. However, with professional lacrosse not being considered a full-time profession, Silva relied on the help the administrators at West Point to make his dreams come true.

In his first season with the Outlaws, Silva registered four goals in the five games the team played. His rookie stats include a hat trick against Connecticut in the season opener and a solo shot in the MLL Championship Game.

After the professional summer tournaments ended, we decided to show the world, specifically people in lacrosse hot beds (United States, Canada), what lacrosse looks like across the globe. This project involved a world tour of six episodes with lacrosse leaders in six different countries: Israel, Denmark, Slovenia, Japan,&nbsp;Serbia, and Poland. After the episode about Poland we will return to our normal content on Going Offsides, but given the success of these international episodes we will continue showcasing these countries from time to time.
On this weeks episode we sit down with Lazar Matijasevic to talk about the state of lacrosse in&nbsp;Serbia, what the plans are for the international tournaments, and how locals are working to grow the game within&nbsp;Serbia.

Lazar plays for one of the premier clubs in&nbsp;Serbia, the Belgrade Zombies, with what I assume is one of the coolest team names in the world. He explains how the team became the Zombies, a most interesting story.

In a post-COVID world you should expect to see&nbsp;Serbia&nbsp;at the European Lacrosse Championships competing for an opportunity to attend the 2023 World Lacrosse Championships.

On episode 24 we speak to the social media myth ECD Greg. Greg Kinneally and his brother Mike are the brains behind the ECD Lacrosse. ECD has grown from Greg selling his custom string jobs on ebay to one of the sports most exciting brands. In the past you may have known ECD for their mesh but they have quickly and thoughtfully expanded into other products such as heads, shafts, and apparel. When Greg isn’t working at HQ he is probably on a lacrosse field somewhere combining his passion for lacrosse with his passion for video editing. Episode 23 was another great one as we talk with&nbsp;Florida Southern&nbsp;Head Coach Marty Ward. Marty is one of the best and most thoughtful coaches in the game, and he speaks with us about growing up off the reservation, having lacrosse be a major link to his heritage and culture. He also talks about how COVID has affected his scheduling and practice planning this year. He also gives us some hints as to what players within the Iroquois program are primed to make waves in college this year.

College Lacrosse Update #1 With Steven MacDonald

When you are the preeminent university in the world, success is the standard. However, as of late, Harvard's lacrosse program hasn't met that standard.

Enter Gerry Byrne.

Well known in the lacrosse world as a defensive guru and elite recruiter, he's more than ready to right the ship. Coach Byrne spent the better part of two decades molding the nations top defenses at Notre Dame. I dont know if he has a green thumb, but his fingerprints are all over the PLL Redwoods and their defensive identity.

Why Harvard, and why now? Gerry always seemed to be a candidate for any high profile job over the past decade, but a combination of things kept him in South Bend. Now that all of the Byrne children are post university, it made the most sense to pursue a head coaching position, and what better place to start than at Harvard.

To compare coach Byrne to his Harvard predecessors would be unfair, I don't know how they built their cultures, how they recruited, or their coaching styles, but I do know his. He brings a relentless passion and intensity to his mission of elevating Harvard Lacrosse to the top. A culture that places importance on the weight of a Harvard education, a coaching style that teaches the why and promotes simplicity, and recruiter who's ability to identify talent that fits his program that is unmatched.

It was an absolute pleasure to learn about how the process of renewing Harvard Lacrosse had been thus far, despite monumental speed bumps with Covid essentially cancelling his first two seasons. It was also incredible to learn the intricacies of how he teaches defense and the value he strives to provide his players off of the field.

I don't know when Harvard will reach championship weekend, but I know I'm not betting against them.

Weekly College Lacrosse Update with Steven MacDonald #2

Coach is fresh off, I mean kind of, a national championship season with the Gamecocks. Being the 2019 champs means they are still, technically, the reigning national champions, even though he doesn't like to think of it that way. Having been a UMBC grad under legendary coach Don Zimmerman, coach Harkey knows what it takes to build and maintain a high caliber program, and I have no doubt USC will do the same.
