Taking the risk to repeat myself, I am always amazed about the roots and triggers of inspiration in general and in music for me. Sometimes, it’s obvious, sometimes, it’s a mix of a thousands things. In any case, it’s not always easy to identify, but usually funny to recognize! For this song, here are some hints...

Of course, as you can guess from its name, first is the city of Montreux itself… beautifully nestled between steep Alps hills and peaceful lakeside of Lac Leman: local, exotic, relaxing and creative all together.

Then, still talking about this town, less about its landscape and more about its world famous July's Montreux Jazz Festival, it leads to the second inspiration: Deep Purple' Smoke on the Water. Yes, sure, you know the story. If not, you should!

Also, the style of this track has been greatly shaped upon the influence of fabulous @AcuteInflections: yes, I like that "velvety mix of Erykah Badu & Billie Holiday paired with the cool grooves of her 007 on bass" of those 2 New Yorkers!

And finally, regarding 18:20? I'm sure you will figure it out by yourself...

But, still, the path from the initial idea to the song you can hear now was long. The few basic tones crystallized from a small game I do play to warm up my fingers on the guitar, moving it from warming-guitar-tone-exercise to piano/contrabass based track was pretty fun, but it wasn’t enough. Something was missing and there I got help from Blaž Pavšič, who produced the final version of the track, supplementing it with awesome percussion.

Hope you will find the outcome of this collaboration as nice as I do. You better do, as I can promise it's won’t be the only one ;-)

A melodic, not so abrasive indie pop song about the enigmatic ravens. 

This birds has an important symbolism in many culture, due to his very distinctive look. I found it interesting, as it’s often associated with negative connotations because of its plumage that shines so black, suggesting it was born from the night and the darkness, but it has also been granted great power and is a symbol of mystery and memory. 
Ravens are also known to be one of the world smartest birds, often compared to dolphins and chimpanzees, able to solve problems, remember how people treated them and plan for future events. 
And we know it, the cleverest are also often the most miserable ones, being less likely to be satisfied and especially prone to depression... 

This song is dedicated to them, people and raven, the desperate ones, the sad souls, those who haven’t laugh for too long... and to all of us who could develop into one of them, by becoming too arrogant, too goal orientated and simply too complicated before simply slippering into night, darkness and death. 
Enjoy! And promise me to smile after that, clear your mind, and give a chance to your desires and hopes for a while.

Is love a chance or a destiny? And how much do we choose the feelings we experiment? 
Some will say that romance feeds coincidences, and coincidences fuel romance, but this lively and energetic guitar based soft rock song takes the opposite view and explore the idea that love is mostly an accident - which by the way can hurt badly. 
One can not choose that event, but only his or her reaction to it. With a assumed amount of irony, those Czech lyrics invite us to consider that one cannot stop the waves, only learn to swim and go along, with more or less style: breaststroke, crawl, backstroke or butterfly… 
If you stop, you sink, so keep swimming! 
Or, maybe, by observing the waves rise and fail and never failing to rise again, you may lift yourself above them too, take place in a craft, pull out an umbrella to protect you from the splashes of two hearts which clash and wait… Wait for the ocean to stop being in love with the moon to finally rest.

Láska je náhoda

This release is a little different from my usual line, results from an obvious folk influence and turns around quite dreamy lyrics and romantic musical arrangement. The mood of this song is about allowing yourself to imagine another life, feel another world, transform one another and, by embarking this imaginary journey, actually just to be. A 3:15 minutes glimpse to a lifetime voyage towards an untethered soul…

Realizing this song brought me a very nice surprise in the form of a pleasant new collaboration. The lyrics required a female voice and I had difficulties finding the ethereal but not immaterial one I had in mind. The challenge persisted for a couple of weeks until I got in touch with Hana Pavšič - the talented Slovenian artist who covered this song with her beautiful voice and brought the extra touch to it, giving it this enchanted atmosphere I was after for this Magic spell.

Each of us has somebody up there whom we miss...

Po ránu

This song may appear simple, if not simplistic. This is right, it’s not a complicated, rather a common, story about opening the door to someone and having to let this someone leaves you one day through the very same door.

However, in life like in love, don’t let the ordinary fool you. The little things in life are the biggest ones and when you have to look back to realize it, you’re actually lost to those magical instants.
Zut doesn’t stand for « Zebra University of Technology », but for « damn! » or « oh, heck! » in French. Yes, in French! Writing in the language of Molière was an arduous choice. It took me a year or so to go from the original « kinda » French lyrics to the final ones, which were done in a bar, on a paper napkin, along a few drinks!

The melody and chords were the most intuitive to find, playing around for a few evenings. However, honestly, my accent didn’t suit the rhythms and atmosphere. Finding singers willing to contribute proved not to be an easier task! Finally, Oliver Neff aka Titanic Jack agreed to record the main vocals. Together with Maja Štebih with her nice back vocals, they made such a great work on this Indie folkish-poppish-rock track. 
Thanks to both of them for their time, trust and capacity to see, and bring, beauty into the world!

It was like in the spy action movie. You find yourself in the middle of atomic bunker of communist era with mission to find the secret document and escape before time’s up and guardians catch you.

It was about 2 years back. We made our first escape game in the heart of Prague. And yes, we did it!!!

It looks like spring is getting here. It raises all around. You can smell it. You can feel it on your face. You can almost touch it...
It reminds me the walk in the wood around Chalet-à-Gobet last year in the period of Indian summer. This special reminiscence awakens my emotions. And emotions turns in acoustic guitar, flute and upright bass and finally all this ends in this song.

Triumphing

In year 2016 we made the successful ascent of Aconcagua (6,962 m).
It was good rock&roll. 
I still have in my mind the hard moments when we have been nailed down to ground on the place called Portezuelo del Viento evaluating if we still have a chance to keep going up.
All this memory turned into this kind of folk&jazz piece. I had good fun to make this music. As good as making this nice summit with good band of friends.

Wiki says that daydream is a fantasy that a person has while awake.

Daydreaming is the stream of consciousness that detaches from current external tasks when attention drifts to a more personal and internal direction. This phenomenon is common in people's daily life shown by a large-scale study in which participants spend 47% of their waking time on average on daydreaming . There are various names of this phenomenon including mind wandering, fantasy, spontaneous thoughts, etc. Daydreaming is the term used by Jerome L. Singer whose research programs laid the foundation for nearly all the subsequent research in this area today. The list of terminologies assigned by researchers today puts challenges on identifying the common features of the phenomenon, in this case daydreaming, and on building collective work among researchers.

There are many types of daydreams, and there is no consistent definition amongst psychologists, however the characteristic that is common to all forms of daydreaming meets the criteria for mild dissociation. Also, the impacts of different types of daydreams are not identical. While some are disruptive and deleterious, others may be beneficial in some way.

Yes, I'm daydreamer. For this track I used acoustic guitar, oboe and clarinet, upright and supplement it with glockenspiel.

Well so I dedicated this song to the bench. Yes, to the bench in south Bohemia city Cesky Krumlov. The bench situated on the border of river Vltava I saw in the middle of winter night and I wanted to spend few moments by sitting on it. And I did not find the path to reach it.

That view stays in my mind and I turned it into this song dedicated to that bench.

When I was making "The bench" I was stating you can dedicate a song to plenty different things. Girlfriend, dog, kid, pet, sky, sun, summer, winter, holidays, feeling, wish, event, country, hero, childhood, bench etc.
And also to your best memory. And that's what I was trying with "Your best memory". However… it is not easy to say what’s my THE best memory. 
Each time I’m passing a good time I feel how the moment screams on me saying: “I will be forever your best memory!”.
Ye, right. One of many. And I feel glad to have them all.

Your best memory

When I started to work on "I pay" I prepared the chords, lyrics, trained the song and then, the moment I was about to start recording, my son came and asked for cosmic song.
Ye, all my inspiration for "I pay" was gone. And new inspiration settled in my head.

I remember I started to think about my career aspiration in his age. I was dreaming about to be astronaut, or pilot or garbage-man... My son is in astronaut phase.

It took me one evening to make him the song. And he immediately loved it so much that each time we sit in car he was asking for "cosmic one". It was top played song in the car for few weeks. I was proud he rated it between AC/CD and their "It's a long way to the top" (he called the noisy one) and Spirituál Kvintet "Beránek a vlk (Riu riu chiu)".

I wanna be in NASA

This easy going and romantic piano melody is inspired by special atmosphere made out of colorful autumn falling leaves.
And it is dedicated to my niece Théodoline living in southwest Wales. Her ability to sit by keyboard piano and keep patiently trying to play a melody encouraged my totally impatient alter-ego to come up with this soft piano fall romance.

I’m running

The lockdown period was long, stressful in many ways and for some of us it brought a lot of logistic and domestic problems. Some of us dealt with it well, when for others it was more difficult. Where there are challenges, there are opportunities… But it’s not always so easy to turn one into the other! One of my heroes said “always look at the bright side of life”! 

For me, the music has been a great help to stay reasonably calm. Playing, pulling notes together on guitar string, listening to my attempts, trying it differently, hearing what I like or not, identifying 7 tones I consider like fitting together well, transforming it into melody, on piano, adding some strings and rhythm behind, following endless round of tests and trials, listening to the intermediate results, all around and again and again, until I got the outcome I liked. Well, quite a usual process, right?
Ye, sure, but it helps to keep my mind calm, peaceful... Zen and this is just why it's called “Zen your mind”.

When the track was done, I started a different step of the process: seeking for the right cover picture for my new song! And what helped me to Zen my mind? The exquisite moment when I saw this sketch of my colleague Kusuma from Bengaluru. I liked it at first glance and I was very happy she kindly agreed to let me use this beautiful drawing.

Each small creation has its own story. This is the one of this track. I hope you will enjoy it! In any case, it’s now up to you to Zen your mind, if you like it and the way you like it!

Zen your mind

I am not a big fan of labelling people and things in general. Music neither by the way. In that respect, my main distinguishing is « I like it » or « I don’t like it » and as Emerson said « A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds », so yeap, even those two simple categories can change after few listening!

For those of you who think it’s a too easy escape, I will try. This song is inspired by other world, folk and jazz authors. If I have to, I would describe it as my personal contribution to the world music with far Asian themes and jazzy kind of transitions, which creates folkish feelings. All those based on percussion, contrabass, acoustic guitar and naturally pipa.

But recognise it: it’s bit like speaking about the menu you had last night at this new restaurant. There are so many ways to describe a culinary experience: using technical words, describing the colors, the consistencies, explaining the tastes, savours, flavours, feelings... But you always end up summarising by « I loved it! » or « Once is enough, thanks! ».

My Chinese lunch

Yes, the cover picture is pinky, because the lyrics of this song are very romantic. Well, what to say? Sometimes, it feels good to loosen up a bit! And if you pay close attention, it’s not all sooo sweet, we sometimes fight, some days are less easy than others, but, yeah, Iove is there and some may want it to stay just like this, for as long as possible. And me, I would like her to know I feel that way, most of the time at least!

On a more technical side, this song is touched by some kind of psychedelics or rock ballad, with an electric guitar base and an unexpected duet, which took me quite a long time to work, rework, rerework and rererework, probably the longest time so far and I hope you will consider those slightly more than 5 minutes of music deserved it!

You would certainly agree that some of the best moments in everyone’s life are those which were not planned? They have extra taste, something sweeter than the others.

This song has a little something from this. It’s a flashback as it’s based on an “old” song from early 2019: “It Rolls”, an instrumental rock track without any words. It made its own path on the wide internet, softly, quietly, until a gentleman commented it with enthusiasm. This gave it a new impulse, some kind of acceleration. We started to discuss and exchange ideas, drafts of lyrics, few tones of melody, an attempt of singing. From attention and discussion to cooperation and collaboration, without even really thinking about it… How nice?

Once the project got clarified, it still took me quite some time to record vocals. Lot of trying and deleting, retrying and redeleting, bit of frustration and impatience! It even reached a point when I started to doubt, if this was really a good idea. Sometimes, when it doesn’t work, it’s for a good reason! But sometimes, a small extra inch of inspiration helps to unwind things. In this case, it was “Pražský výběr” and the inimitable style of Vilém Čok which crossed my mind. One evening later, the final recording was done. Only mastering was needed more before presenting it to the co-author of this song and waiting for his feedback, which was positive and finally publishing it for you…

I hope you will like the result of this partnership, in the form of an alternative rock underlined by an expressive solo guitar and a funny regressive text! But, before you listen to it, understand me well: I don't and I can't compare my skills with those legends and I mention them only as a tribute to their great source of inspiration. Speaking about encouragement, let’s not forget about the words of Helen Keller, who certainly knew what she was speaking about when she said: “Alone we can do so little: together we can do so much”!

Ladat, born Ladislav Tesar, is Litomerice (Czech republic) native, body and soul, who writes and composes his music in Chatel-St-Denis, Switzerland.
