Design Goodness

Marian Bantjes is a typographer, designer, artist and writer. Working from a small island off the west coast of Canada, her personal and obsessive work has brought her international recognition. Her work has been published in books and magazines around the world and is included in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

In this interview with Debbie Millman, Bantjes discusses her most recent book, I Wonder (Monicelli and Thames & Hudson), her shift from typesetter to famous designer, ornament, secrets, cipher, coded text, causing pain to type purists and the importance of putting good work into the public sphere.

Erik Spiekermann is author, information architect, type designer (FF Meta, ITC Officina, FF Unit et al) and author of books and articles on type and typography. He founded MetaDesign, Germany’s largest design firm, in 1979 and is responsible for corporate design programmes for Audi, Skoda, Volkswagen, Lexus, Heidelberg Printing, and Bosch, as well as way-finding projects like Berlin Transit, Düsseldorf Airport and many others. In 1988 he started FontShop (http://fontshop.com), a company for production and distribution of electronic fonts. He is board member of the German Design Council and Past President of the ISTD International Society of Typographic Designers, as well as the IIID International Institute for Informationdesign. 

He now runs Edenspiekermann with offices in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Stuttgart & San Francisco. In 2001, he redesigned The Economist magazine in London. His book for Adobe Press, Stop Stealing Sheep (http://j.mp/XEZlBv) has been reprinted several times and translated into German, Russian and Italian. His corporate font family for Nokia was released in 2002. In 2003 he received the Gerrit Noordzij Award from the Royal Academy in Den Haag. His type system DB Type for Deutsche Bahn was awarded the Federal German Design Prize in gold for 2006. In May 2007 he was the first designer to be elected into the Hall of Fame by the European Design Awards for Communication Design.

Paula Scher studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and began her graphic design career as a record cover art director at both Atlantic and CBS Records in the 1970s. In 1984 she co-founded Koppel & Scher, and in 1991 she joined Pentagram as a partner. She is arguably the most successful and influential woman working in design today. (07.15.05)

Neville Brody a British designer and art director, has been at the forefront of graphic design for over two decades. Initially working in record cover design, Brody made his name through his revolutionary work as art director for Face magazine. Milton Glaser is among the most celebrated graphic designers in the United States. He has the distinction of one-man-shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center. In 2004 he recieved the lifetime achievement award from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. As a Fulbright scholar, Glaser studied with the painter, Giorgio Morandi. In 2010 Glaser was awarded the National Medal of Arts, he is the first graphic designer to receive this award. (10.12.10)

Louise Fili designs specialty food packaging and restaurant identities, and is pazza for tins that speak Italian. A graduate of Skidmore College, Louise designed books at Alfred A. Knopf in the mid 70's, worked for Herb Lubalin from 1976-78 and then joined Random House as Pantheon’s art director in 1978. In her eleven-year tenure as art director of Pantheon Books she reinvented book jacket design. Louise’s passion for 1930s Italian and French poster design migrated from her book covers to her restaurant design. Jennifer Sterling is a designer, artist, typographer and book publisher based in New York and the rincipal of Sterling Design. Her work has been exhibited and resides in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Library of Congress. In 2000 she was inducted into Alliance Graphique Internationale and Who’s Who in America. Graphis included her in their “Top Ten Designers in the World” list and USA GD named her as one of “Twelve Designers to change Design into the Millennium.” Additionally she has served on the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's Design and Accessions Board.

Design Matters with Debbie Millman: Jennifer Sterling

Emily Oberman studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She began her career working with Tibor Kalman at his legendary studio M&Co., where from 1987 to 1993 she collaborated with Kalman to create groundbreaking work for Knoll, Wieden & Kennedy, Talking Heads, and Bennetton’s Colors magazine. In 1993, she co-founded the design studio Number Seventeen with her partner Bonnie Siegler. She joined Pentagram’s New York office as partner in April 2012. Her clients have included NBC Universal (logos for “30 Rock,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “Saturday Night Live,” including the opening title sequence for 15 years), Herman Miller, Air America and the creation of Lucky magazine for Condé Nast. Oberman’s book design has included work for the Type Directors Club, HBO’s “Sex and the City,” Glamour magazine, and the deluxe illustrated edition of Stephen Dubner’s Superfreakonomics. Her work has been recognized by the AIGA, the Type Directors Club, and the Art Directors Club, among others. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious Augustus Saint-Gaudens Award for distinguished alumni from her alma mater Cooper Union. She has served on the national board of AIGA and as president of its New York chapter.
