A new collaborative trio to grace the Balance Music roster, Micah, Gai Barone, and Echomen are highly regarded artists in their own rights. Joining forces for the first time to showcase their 'Ecstasy' EP. A storied artist with a collection of high profile releases to his name, Micah quickly rose to prominence on the back of his innovative and flowing DJ sets for the Hybridized site in the mid 2000s alongside Hybrid and Way Out West. Going on to showcase a clutch of impressive releases for Global Underground, Perspectives Digital, and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, the Canadian star has also used his Ruhnsong imprint as a vehicle for his production work. Gai Barone is an artist requiring little in the way of introductions. A favourite of the DJ glitterati from Apparat, and Above & Beyond, to Henry Saiz, and Hernan Cattaneo, the Italian has consistently found himself at the summit of the underground dance scene with galaxy of star releases for some of the industry's leading imprints since he hit early heights in 2009 with 'Lilith' on Afterglow. Some 650 production credits later and Gai Barone remains one of the progressive fraternity's leading figures with music for Renaissance, Lost & Found, and Black Hole Recordings. A trio of credits for Balance Music found Gai Barone & Micah provide a moment of progressive house magic with the 'Prisma' EP in late 2021. Chris Scott aka Echomen (and Lexicon Avenue) is another artist with a notable musical history dating back to 2001 and his 'Thru 2 You' EP which included a remix from the legendary figure of Bushwacka! going on to release on the leviathan Hooj Choons in 2002, Joel Armstrong's Dot Com Recordings in 2006 and the highly regarded, Mesmeric between 2012 and 2014, Echomen's portfolio reads like a 'who's who' of releases for the finest modern underground labels. Joining Micah & Gai Barone for his first commercial release in over 7 years, Echomen's talent is still clearly evident. Coming in three differing shapes and potency, 'Ecstasy' opens with a shimmering 'Intro Mix' that brings spine tingling melodic elements to the fore in the opening phases before a deep kick provides a metronomic anchor. Replete with textured pads that gently pulsate as they pan the stereo spectrum, atmospheric washes create a euphoric sonic landscape that hypnotises through its repetitive and gently evolving phrasing. The 'Main Mix' follows the same melodic structures as its counterpart, but the introduction of a sublime bassline groove adds a club friendly structure to proceedings as does top line urgency in the shape of off beat hats and toms. 'Micah's Floor Head Remix' creates a thumping club stormer full of rhythmic prowess and brio as an immaculately conceived percussive groove provides the perfect foundation for melodic elements to shine. Building easily over its near 9 minute duration, familiar motifs and bassline groove make their presence felt. Pausing for breath at an extended, stripped back breakdown, the build and drop back into the complex rhythmic backdrop is tribute to an artist whose skill, technique and craftsmanship have always been front and centre in his production work.

Partial Press Release: The 43rd release on microCastle welcomes Brian Cid back to the label for a brand new EP. The NYC based artist has enjoyed much success since his label debut in December of 2014. An EP on Hot Since 82's Knee Deep In Sound and a mini LP on Guy J's Lost & Found Records top his 2015 highlights, while 2016 holds even greater promise with a new project for Cityfox on the horizon. Over the last 12 months Brian's sound has taken on a life of its own, increasingly organic and deeply emotional, the US artist has further stretched his sonic boundaries, with luminaries such as Adriatique, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Joris Voorn, Richie Hawtin and Thugfucker now play listing his music. His return to microCastle has been much anticipated and a quiet start to 2016 has only made his rapidly expanding fan base even hungrier for new material. Brian now presents his second EP for the Canadian imprint entitled 'Belles Du Shaman' alongside a remix from Eagles & Butterflies.

The lone interpretation of 'Belles Du Shaman' is provided by Eagles & Butterflies who is making his first appearance on microCastle. Currently based in Los Angeles Chris Barratt aka Eagles & Butterflies has quickly become one of the underground's most inspiring talents. With a contemporary flair and fresh approach to production, the Dixon and John Digweed favourite has not surprisingly found a home on both Innervisions and Bedrock, along with Get Physical and his own Spread Your Wings imprint. 2016 has already been met with several highlights including EPs on Bedrock and Exit Strategy along with a remix of Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi. For his 'Belles Du Shaman' interpretation Chris has stripped the track down and reinvented the elements over a punchy groove, carrying the main themes on a more subversive journey. A wonderfully warped third act, complete with dynamic fills and a twisty emotive lead, ultimately seals the tracks brilliance, making it one of Eagles & Butterflies most sought after remixes this year.

Electronic music producer Chloé and instrumentalist Vassilena are releasing Balani, an astonishingly original single, which heralds their first co-written album, on the cards for 2020.

Balani reveals the perfect synthesis of the two artists’ specific musical artistry: the intoxicating sounds of Vassilena's marimba arranged and shaped by Chloé's electronic production. The electronic beats and sequences which start out understated, wind around several percussion loops with added effects, all gradually escalating to culminate in a wild euphoria. 

Balani is up there with the craziest techno rushes before taking on a slow baleful rhythm to finish. It comes to a close as if exhausted but finally satiated by such an abundance of energy.

Flashback: to the end of 2016, at a recording for Culture Box, France Television's replay platform, the collective Sourdoreille invited Chloé and Vassilena to collaborate as a duo on a new live performance. Although the idea was originally for something ephemeral, the collaboration has been going ever since, both on stage and in the studio.

The chemistry between the two artists was palpable from the beginning, fueled by the personal affinity that developed with the “scholarly” Bulgarian musician, who is also artistic director of Bulgaria’s International Marimba and Percussion Festival and the Paris Percussion Group ensemble (with Jean-Baptiste Leclère): the rhythmic and ethereal character of the marimba marries perfectly with Chloé’s synthetic beats and textures.

In parallel with their own trajectories, the two artists developed their original machine/percussion repertoire as a duo with an invitation to Studio Venezia, part of the 2017 French Pavilion’s program at the 2017 Venice Biennale, designed and programmed by contemporary artist Xavier Veilhan. Chloé and Vassilena spent six days improvising and ended up creating original tracks and developing their "sound" in an hour-long live performance.

These foundations plus the enthusiasm for the project on stage prompted the duo to produce two tracks in 2018 for a vinyl released on Record Store Day as part of a Unik Session(produced by l'Adami and Radio France), recorded at the Maison de la Radio, on the principle that the recording would not be edited. This release already included a first live version of a very rhythmic track, Balani.

After more than two years of touring Europe, including appearances at major festivals (Musiq3, Days Off, Verbier Festival, Menton Music Festival), Chloé and Vassilena have been able to reinvent their own repertoire and perfect their style. At the end of November 2019, they were back in front of the cameras with the Sourdoreille collective for a live session at Orly airport, subject of a new Culture Box broadcast. At the same time Balani was released as a single on Lumière Noire Records, a final version which has evolved and matured with each performance.
