Dirty Epic welcomes the Serbian artist @lag for the fifth episode of our Amplify Series podcast.

A promoter of the underground culture, a DJ and a respected producer - Serbian-born Lag is the on the forefront of the new wave of techno artists.

It is easy to notice from his sound that he did not take the usual route on his musical journey. He grew up on punk, acquired a classical education in music and then quit it all to find himself enchanted by the possibilities of expressing oneself both through DJing and making electronic music. He chose techno to be the host for his creative discharge, while always incorporating a certain dosage of his previous musical life to his current work. Grit, rhythm and attitude are his main tools as he blends them into his music, creating a potent combination which enchants, moves and unifies.

Lag’s DJ performances on the Exit festival’s main DJ stage, and the legendary Tresor club speak volumes of his ability to engage his crowd, and offer an intense sonic experience. Through his DJ sets, as well as through workshops and events he organized and promoted under the umbrella of his organization 29524, Lag put efforts into closing the gap between the “good” and the “known”. Since then his promotional activities have reduced, and his focus moved to delivering extremely functional DJ sets, but also on creating and releasing original music, mostly in the techno genre. After several appearances and releases, predominantly on the Serbian label Teskoba, his remix of Grovskopa’s “Atopic” is released on vinyl by Sect Records. He follows it up with his first EP named “Stutter”, a highly acclaimed release which came out on the notoriously uncompromising Singularity Recordings, and his latest outputs, 12” releases on MORD Records named “Misfit EP” and "Fiend EP", underline the quality and uniqueness of his already recognizable sound.

Lag is set to stay on his current path as his mission, his initial vision, is yet to flicker. His ruthless determination is awe inspiring, and is, along with his musical prowess, the main reason for his rising popularity. Lag is definitely someone to keep an eye on, but more importantly - someone to listen to. After all, as he frequently states, “it’s all about the music”.

As always with the DJ Strana Muzika pseudonym - the idea is not to play underground or difficult, pop or easy. It's simply painting the moods and conversations in different colors through the medium of music. It's taking sharp turns, evaluating the main values of one song and contrasting it with the next, aiming to keep a soft tension at all times. Lag - What We Do In Life, Feedbacks In Eternity

"Earlier this year I was playing at a friend's birthday party in Croatia (hi Allan). He is a connoisseur of electronic music so the people he invited to play were pretty diverse, music style-wise. It's really rare for me to be blown away by someone's set but after me a guy called Odd from Kuala Lumpur started playing and he blew me away to pieces. Not only did he play some of the best techno I heard all year (I didn't recognize a single track) but he did it in a way that I realized I was sorely missing: stable, hypnotic, groovy (actually groovy, not just a big kick and then some afterthoughts behind it), always advancing but also always persuasive in its message.
I hope I channeled a bit of what he did in this set. It's very hard for someone who grew up listening to too much IDM/Braindance to be as patient and consistent as is needed for this type of sets, but I think I managed to meet this very fond memory of a summer morning and my wanderlust for the entire spectrum of emotions and energies somewhere halfway.

Lag is a Serbian-born techno maestro who has been in love with buttons since 56k modems, but as internet went faster he turned out to be one of our most prolific DJs and producers. He loves to make noise and he loves it loud, “it’s all about the music” he says. Playing Tresor, EXIT Festival, Drugstore or traveling Germany, Holland and Poland pushed his vision further and brought him more vinyls on his wall. Yes, those from Surgeon’s and Dave Clarke’s sets! Lag promoted the underground culture for many years, getting deeper into evil, dusty and dirty sounds but for this occasion he has recorded something different. Scrath your head for IDs and enjoy his mixtape, as well as some future releases from Red Bull Studios, K7 Records, Ghostly International, Nous’klaer Audio and Itiswhatitis.

Back in 2019. my friends from Monosaccharide and I got a request to play a live act on the NSNS stage at the Exit Festival. We never did any music together, and, besides our mutual love and respect for each other, never really collaborated. Challenge accepted!

We knew we were gonna be sandwiched between the relentless 999999999 and the head of next-gen electronica that is Blawan so we wanted to give the crowd a bit of a respite from the onslaught. After the decision on the general mood was made we proceeded to jam as often as our busy work and life schedules allowed us to and it all came together for this sunrise set at the NSNS stage. 

Big love to Dragana and Sreten, and a special thank you to Alek who kept reminding me to dig up the recording of this live.

"This is a long mixtape of tracks that influenced me throughout my years. I'm aware that people are supposed to actually listen to this whole thing so I decided that my ego should be tamed for that purpose and I made some compromises with the timing and the selection. For example, I'd play a lesser known and just as interesting Bomb The Bass track instead of Prodigy's 3 Kilos as they both came from a similar scene and they both have same phasey downtempo vibe that I've fallen in love with. Instead of the punk anthem "God Save The Queen" by Sex Pistols I've included The Damned's rework of a 60's classic "Looking At You" which encapsulates the the "we are here and all we need is each other" ethos with which the youth of a time took back the power. I've replaced Ed Rush & Optical's well known Alien Girl with their b-side track Vendetta which came out later but is a just-as-good example of their dark funk that I've searched in a lot of techno later. And so on. 

I've skipped some very obvious artists because of the length and flow of the mixtape (like Propellerheads, Tom Waits etc.) but in some cases I stood my ground: for example, even though the Mr. Oizo track stands out from the rest of the music in mood and style, it's a good representative of the insanely well executed hi-energy-stupid-happy music (with Fatboy Slim headlining the movement) that I was massively into at that time.
Another compromise is that I tried keeping it deeper and smoother as well because I have no idea who'd enjoy more than an hour of hard distorted stuff like AFX's Elephant Song or Clipping.'s Body & Blood on their headphones.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this journey. Most of this music makes me grateful for being alive to experience it. If you find one piece in this collection that makes you feel that way it was worth everything."
