Our next mix is slightly different than normal as it is a live recording of a dj-set from Bell Towers. As such, there is the odd gap in the music, but once you have been wowed by the selections and technical ability you are sure you will forgive us that. Bell Towers is celebrated as an energetic DJ and house music maestro who first made his name in Australia before re-locating to London. As a selector Bell Towers fuses psychedelic dance with dreamy pop and really understands clubs and dance floors. He also makes music on labels like  Prins Thomas’s Internajonal where his boogie basslines interact with slinky drums in a truly live fashion. 

Starting with some pure feel good funk vibes, the ensuing two hours is a whirlwind ride through charismatic sounds from many different genres. It will take you up and down, round and round and have you wracking your brain to work out just how the man has managed to mix so many different styles and tempos together in such a tight knit fashion. A mix that really showcases Bell Towers’ diverse taste as much as his dexterous DJ ability, there can be no better way to kick start your week than with this one blaring out. 


Dekmantel Podcast 017 - Bell Towers

In the first week of September we're heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we've launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

As our series are expanding rapidly, we've invited special guest Tako for our next mix. Tako has been an important key figure and collector in the Dutch music scene, whilst being the co-owner of Amsterdam's specialist second-hand vinyl shop Red Light Records and co-running the excellent Music From Memory label with Jamie Tiller. A truly passionate and experienced digger, Tako always has an array of audio gems pulled from the far reaches of his immense vinyl collection at the ready.

His mix for us defines why we’re such big fans of this fantastic selector. "This mix includes recent finds of tribal, percussive and meditative Colombian, Mexican and Brazilian music that I’ve been into and they are explored in a sequence in the first part to achieve somewhat of a meditative state but as always my direction flows into another state and into another - this here might be a representation of darkness to light and night to day; a meditation to dance."

In this third chapter of the BROT series, we wrap up the trilogy from the Reykjavík based producer Felix https://soundcloud.com/felixleifur, who has genuinely showcased his incredible set of production skills throughout the year.

These last five BROT tracks move the sound to another spectrum where Felix plays around with his traditional sound. But this time the tempo is high, and the strong influences from old school breakbeat and jungle shine through. Felix's BROT 03 ties up the first BROT series with flair and this one will surely not be the last one.

Icelandic producer https://soundcloud.com/jonbjorn returns to his Lagaffe Tales imprint to deliver four vibrant cuts on the ‘BROT’ catalogue.

In a small valley between two mountains in the Icelandic Westfjords, you can find the source of creativity for the Reykjavík based Icelandic DJ and producer, Jónbjörn. As well as being an accomplished DJ, performing in Berlin, Vienna, Helsinki, Tbilisi and festivals such as Sonar Reykjavik and Secret Solstice, the last three years has seen Jónbjörn carving out a solo career both as a graphic designer, and music producer developing a sound of his own working with labels such as Neo Violence, FALK Records, D.KO Records and remixes on his Lagaffe Tales imprint – the label he’s been running for the past seven year runs with his friend Viktor Birgiss. In 2020 Lagaffe Tales will introduce more artists on the BROT series which https://soundcloud.com/felixleifur started ever so memorably with a headturning trilogy in 2019.

The opener entitled ‘Shamisen’ kicks off the EP with stabbing electro drums, fluttering synth work harmonising with the gentle melodies throughout while ‘Anthophila Anna’ provides a more technofocused feel with raw modulations, acid-fuelled tones and surging, lo-fi rhythms.

On the filp, ‘Tinni’ deploys a menacing synth line, growing oscillations floating with the weight-driven kicks and snares offering up a peak-time dancefloor focused cut before ‘Sakuragawa’ rounds off proceedings with shimmering grooves harmonising with the aquatic tones and effervescent elements that pulsate until the end.
